Earlier this week, Cipriani Wall Street played host to the 23rd Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards. Guests and celebrities alike enjoyed cocktails provided by Russian Standard Vodka. The awards featured seven categories; juries of filmmakers determined the winners, while moviegoers chose the winner of the audience award. During the ceremony, Steve Buscemi gave a heartfelt tribute to renowned actor James Gandolfini. Ethan Hawke and Julie Dempley also presented Richard Linklater with a tribute, while Lee Daniels paid tribute to Forest Whitaker. Other presenters at the awards included Mayor Bloomberg, Rashida Jones, Katheryn Hahn, Shailene Woodley and Jared Leto. The awards were hosted by comedian Nick Kroll.
The restaurant undoubtedly draws patrons in with their incredible homemade pasta dishes, but they can wow you with more than just pasta. Giano boasts creative appetizers, such as Crocchette di Ricotta e Tonno (tuna and riccotta corquettes), outstanding PolPette al Pomodoro gratinate (meatballs), and Asparagi Gratinati (asparagus with fontina cheese). Each dish stood out on its own and made us excited to try what was next.
As mentioned, Giano is quite well known for their delicious pastas. With eight different selections to choose from it can be quite a difficult choice. Stand outs include Gnocchi ai 4 Formaggi (four cheese potato gnocchi), Ravioli di Spinaci e ricotta (spinach and ricotta ravioli) and Bigoli al ragu d’agnello e noci tostate (thick spaghetti with lamb ragout). The gnocchi was so good it melted in your mouth and had the perfect consistency. The bigoli was so unique and fun, while the ravioli was a real winner. You can't go wrong with whatever dish you choose.
Douglas Hannant's Spring/Summer 2014 collection showcased during New York Fashion Week to incredible reviews. In help with that was the classic, fresh-faced look of the models. Lead hair stylist, Edward Tricomi (co-owner of Warren-Tricomi Salons), styled the girls with slicked back hair with a simple twist. This is a great look for every day or a night on the town.
To recreate the simple, elegant look, blowdry your hair with a flat brush and use L'Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil, which protects the hair, fights frizz and adds shine. Once the hair is dry, add a dime-sized amount of Mythic Oil and run through your hair and then flatiron hair.
The Doe Fund, a New York City based non-profit, works around the clock to develop and implement cost-effective, holistic programs that meet the needs of a diverse population working to break the cycles of homelessness, addiction and criminal recidivism. The organization, which was founded by George T. McDonald, is best known for its award winning program Ready, Willing & Able, which puts thousands of men to work in its signature blue uniforms throughout the city, helping to keep more than 150 miles of NYC streets clean and green each day as a transitional employment program. The program offers homeless and formerly incarcerated individuals transitional work and housing, along with case management, life skills, educational assistance, occupational training and more. Joonbug recently took a trip to their headquarters in Brooklyn to take a tour of their facilities and find out what The Doe Fund is all about.
Friday, September 20th, marks the start of a momentous occasion...the first day of New York Oyster Week! NYOW is a fun-filled celebrate of all things oyster. Oyster Week was founded by Kevin Joseph in order to celebrate the oyster and its role in the ecology, economy, and culture of our planet. Not many people know this, but oysters are good for more than just eating! NYOW works to raise awareness and funds for non-profits that work to protect and restore habitats in which oysters thrive. It's important to aide in oyster shell recovery, which helps with oyster reef restoration and the creation of new oyster beds, instead of throwing your shells into the trash. Additionally, our beloved city was actually built out of oysters! That's right, back in the day oysters were used as mortar and helped to build the amazing city we all know and love. So now it's time to give back to the creatures that we all hold dear to our hearts...er, mouths, and celebrate our favorite bicuspid.
Las Vegas is well known for its over the top parties and theatrics, which makes it the perfect city to kick off the inaugural Life is Beautiful Festival. On Friday, October 25th, 2013, from 8-12pm, 16 celebrity chefs will participate in 'Grills & Guitars,' a celebration of barbecue, combining creative open flame cooking with craft brews, artisanal wines and original cocktails. Participating chefs include Clayton Arakawa, Aaron Sanchez, Scott Conant and more, with special appearances by Tom Colicchio, Nancy Silverton and Michael Symon. During the festival, Chef Jonathon Waxman will be honored with the first ever commemorative award for his dedication to educating and mentoring many of today's top chefs.
Kicking off on Monday, September 16th, Evelyn will host Your Drink Here, a cocktail competition featuring El Jimador Tequila. Some of the city's best bartenders will be competing for the chance to have their cocktail featured on Evelyn's menu and your vote counts! You can purchase your $25 ticket here, which will get you a sample of four different specialty El Jimador Tequila drinks, along with a half dozen oysters from Village Fishmonger. The doors open at 6pm and the competition starts at 7:30pm.
You have both Brazilian and American influences in your music - how do you think that distinguishes you as a DJ?
I think because it's a whole different culture and it's so accepted - Brazilian is so in fashion and in style; anything in Brazilian culture; Brazilian music, food, etc. I think bringing a little bit of that and mixing it in with everything I live and breathe in New York City makes a big different.
I heard you are going to be launching a Brazilian party series in December. Can you tell us about that?
It's something that I did this past December at a coffee shop with some friends. I was doing a party at The Darby and then I moved to Coffee Shop, but now we are in talks about doing something else Brazilian at Hotel Chantelle. We are shopping around for different ideas, but hopefully by the Fall we will have something solid together. I want to do something more classic Brazilian, like Bosa Nova and some newer stuff.

The store, located in Park Slope, opened this past Thursday and hosted an evening party where a select few were invited to taste some of their delicious treats. Within an industry dominated by heavily frosted cupcakes, it is refreshing to have the cleaner, lighter option of Fabipops; simply put, cake pops are way easier to eat than your typical cupcake! We also love that the store offers bite-sized mini truffles in each flavor for customers to sample. Another great characteristic of Fabipops, besides how fun and cute they are, is that you can also order them gluten, dairy or nut free!
"This charity means a lot to me because I'm from Haiti," says co-founder Unik Ernest. "I had the chance to leave Haiti to come to America and have a better life, education, and the opportunity to see what life has to offer. People in Haiti are still living on under $1 a day. People keep saying that it's getting better, but honestly, I don't see it getting any better."
Mr. Baldwin presented the night's honorees Sharon Bush, Dr. Jane Aronson, and Cindy Stagoff with the Edeyo Hope, Humanitarian and Empowerment awards, respectively. Chair member Nigel Barker honored Nancy Myers-Alverez with the Edeyo Ambassador awards.
