Barclays Bringing the Party to Brooklyn

New York has always been the place to be, but has becoming less and less the place the live.

It seems that all over the map, neighborhoods are shrinking with the influx of imbibing touristy hotspots and all the locals can do is voice their concerns against the massive amounts of funds going into developing these new party destinations.

The latest coup is happening around the Barclays Center Arena in Brooklyn. The stampeding Nets fans and concert goers looking to keep the jeep riding aren’t going to take off for Manhattan if all the nightlife adventures are laid out in front of them, and so here come the bars and restaurants.

"Cyclo-Phone" To Serenade Astor Place

Most New Yorkers are familiar with the Alamo cube that sits perched on the cross streets, and many know what minutes of fun can be had spinning the giant block.

It's a great meeting spot for locals and travelers alike. Now, thanks to NYC’s Summer Streets Program, which focuses on the cities valuable public spaces, there’s something else you can spin this month.

Gaze in awe upon the Cyclo-Phone, a bicycle-powered musical instrument of sorts that’s built out of a kiddie pool. PVC pipes stick out the sides linking to a stationary bike that powers the installation.

More Beer: Rockaway Brewing Company Expands

It’s always nice to see a business grow, especially when that business is brewing beers.

Long Island City’s Rockaway Brewing Company, a microbrewery which opened in June, is now expanding its distribution to cover the LES and Williamsburg.

Formerly, the brewery only sold their ESB and Summer Ale to Low Tide Bar on 96th and the Boardwalk on Rockaway Beach, literally on a bicycle built by Recycle-A-Bicycle.

NYC's Continuing Nightlife Wars

As we reported earlier this week, Greenwood Park patrons are having a lot of fun. Maybe too much fun. Conversely, Greenwood Park neighbors aren’t having any fun at all, and not just because their children have to play next to a cemetery. And it's getting worse.

Since opening a month ago, the beer hall has been hosting a slew of patrons that have decided to make the area their own public, let’s say, comfort station.

Neighbors have been displeased with the influx of public urination, public sex, and the streets have been dusted with a mix of cigarettes and puke.

An Event Space To Die For

For those looking for a different kind of event space, one that puts you in the open air of Manhattan, surrounded by a bustling neighborhood, say, the East Village, then the trustees of the New York Marble Cemetery should be on your call list.

In an effort to fund much needed restorations, the cemetery, which was built in 1830, and at the time was at the city’s northern perimeter, has hosted a slew of events ranging from weddings, film and television settings, and even ballet recitals.

While the last burial was in 1937, Caroline S. DuBois, one of the trustees, told the New York Times they were looking for ways “we could make the cemetery pay for itself.” The cemetery is, however, subject to the perils of New York City. Peter Van C. Luquer, a former trustee says he used to find hypodermic needs in the grass and used condoms and underwear in the trees.

But don’t let your imagination wander off in the dark depths of a Stefon Zolesky inspired party dream just yet, they don’t allow just anyone in!
