My first reaction to hearing that A Tribe Called Quest’s former front man Q-Tip would be playing a drug dealer in an upcoming movie - was to yawn. The whole genre of movies based on the thrills and spills of drug dealing seems to have been running empty for the last few years, and there isn’t really anything revolutionary about tapping a rapper to take a role in one.
But I became a little more interested when I found out that Q-Tip would be playing an Ethiopian ecstasy dealer. And than, my interest piqued when I found out that the other main character in the movie (who will be played by Jesse Eisenberg) is a Hasidic Jew who imports ecstasy into the United States and distributes it. Q-Tip, who recently released his solo album The Renaissance, is no stranger to film, he starred in 2001’s Prison Song, and last year had a role in Cadillac Records.
The independent movie, cleverly entitled Holy Rollers, is being directed by Kevin Tyler Asch and written by Antonio Macia and is based on a true story from the late nineties. No official release date has been announced yet, but production is underway and it is slated to come out at some point in 2009. I for one am looking forward to it, and I daresay it will be anything but an orthodox drug movie.
