John Travolta Under the Bus, Doesn't Seem to be Coming Out Anytime Soon
What we can all learn from the Travolta's of the world.

Poor John Travolta. It seems everyday there is a top story about his alleged homosexuality. The famed actor continues to get thrown under the bus amidst continuous allegations and he doesn't seem to be coming out (in more ways than one) any time soon. From cross-dressing photos exposed to sexual harassment suits filed by male massage therapists and alleged relationships with male porn stars and his personal pilot Doug Gotterba, Travolta's personal life is anything but personal.

The worst part about it is not that he may be homosexual, but that he's been hiding it for decades. There have been whispers in Hollywood since the beginning of his career that Travolta is gay. It is also known that many actors personally feel that coming out of the closet is career suicide. And this sentiment is probably merited, unfortunately. With the manufactured Hollywood "image factory" it's all about smoke and mirrors.

But here is the thing we wish actors knew: We have progressed as a nation (mostly). We don't care if you're gay. It doesn't make you any less talented. What really pisses us off is being deceived and lied to. If all these allegations about Travolta are true (sans him being married or anything considered harassment or illegal), as a gay man, he's not really doing anything other than, well, being gay. Which is not a crime. It's the "harassment" and "cheating" allegations that we are so bothered by, NOT that he may be gay.

I feel awful for John Travolta. If I saw him, I would hug him. This is what happens to people after decades of repression, judgement, and denying who they are. I can only imagine such repression as a personal hell that drives one to madness. This is why LGBT youth are 5 times more likely to commit suicide.

So to the Travolta's of the world: Come out as who you are. We will applaud your honesty and may even like you more for being brave and not living a lie. Living your life with integrity should be more important than perceptions of the close-minded or landing a role in Hollywood.

Just a thought.
