The National Football League has filed a lawsuit against singer M.I.A. for $1.5 million after she raised her middle finger, and it was caught on camera, during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show. The NFL stated in their lawsuit that the singer intentionally breached her contract and made the league look bad.
The singer released a YouTube video responding to the lawsuit. In the video, M.I.A. stated that she finds the way in which cheerleaders were dancing in the background to be more offensive than what she did. “They were under 16. If you look at them they’re wearing cheerleader outfits, hips thrusting in the air, legs wide open…in a very sexually provocative position,” M.I.A. stated in the video.
M.I.A.’s lawyer, Howard King, wants to prove that what the singer did was not that big of a deal by making behaivior that the NFL would not approve of known to the public.
It’s safe to say that M.I.A. will not be giving in and paying the fine anytime soon.
