Above and Beyond at Mansion
Reporting by Jessica Ekman
No Miami Music Week is complete without seeing a performance from the beloved Above & Beyond. Last Tuesday, Tony and Paavo teamed up to perform their hearts out to a sold-out crowd at Mansion Nightclub in South Beach, Miami with support from Beckwith and Norin & Rad. Also in attendance were friends MK, Gareth Emery, Bossi of Cosmic Gate, and Kevin Wild. Thanks to Opium Group, the show was a success as those in attendance kicked their MMW off the right way.
Fueled by the energy of the crowd, Above & Beyond’s performance was absolutely beautiful. Including tracks like Moonbeam’s “Pick Me Up,” Mat Zo’s “Pyramid Scheme,” and their very own “Thing Called Love,” “Alchemy,” and “Walter White,” the set was on point for any Anjunabeats lover. At the end of the show, Tony and Paavo picked a lucky fan from the crowd who held a sign saying “Official Button Pusher” to press the button during “Sun & Moon.” The moment was quite magical for everyone in the room. With hopes that the audience took away one of their many messages, Tony and Paavo wrapped up the night with passion and fire.
If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed or rundown, why not give therapy a try? Therapy for the soul, that is…music!
Embracing the therapeutic potential of music, English trance trio Above and Beyond has created a movement in the EDM world. Despite being formed way back in 2000, they still ranked as number 17 on DJ Magazine’s list of Top 100 DJs of 2013. They started out as remix artists, mixing hits by artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, and others, but their demand and popularity was off the charts, and they played at numerous festivals and concerts before releasing their debut album in 2006.
"I'm sorry baby, you were the sun & moon to me..."
Proposal at EZOO NY 2013: Above & Beyond really do believe in “a thing called love”! During their performance at Electric Zoo, they helped a guy with probably the most epic proposal of 2013. In a crowd full of people, they typed this to the audience, to one girl in particular. It’s better if we show you (she said yes, by the way). Check out our interview with the couple here.
Renowned UK group, Above & Beyond, have just announced a new event series set to take place at famed Las Vegas nightclub Hakkasan & are giving the chance for two lucky fans to help them kick off their new series in style. The series begins January 23rd & the group are offering a competition via their Facebook page to win a VIP prize including a flight for two to Las Vegas, a stay at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino, dinner for two at Hakkasan restaurant & a chance to meet & greet the group face to face. The winners will also be treated to a private screening of the group’s new film, Acoustic, a day before the film’s global release on Vice’s THUMP Youtube channel on January 24th.
2013 is coming to a near finish, which means it's time to reflect on the year's most exciting Artists and DJs. The rise of EDM is no secret and not to be overrated. With an abundance of new talent, artists recreating their sound, and stellar festival sets that stood out from the rest, the EDM scene looks like it's constantly generating exciting buzz all throughout the year. Here's our pick of the Top 20 DJs who's made a great impression in the electronic music scene:
It's no secret that Robbert van de Corput, better recognized as, Hardwell, was crowned DJ Mag's #1 DJ. In 2011, he entered the Top 100 list at #24, quickly rising the ranks to #1 in a matter of only two years. There's a reason why he's been voted the top DJ, just look at the views on all his major festival sets on Youtube. His Tomorrowland set garnered 16+ million views while his Ultra set is at 17+ million views. The numbers certainly speak for themselves. At only 25 years old, there's no slowing down this festival tycoon anytime soon!
The end of a music festival is always depressing. We often tend to make it sadder than it really is or needs to be, maybe because we’re slightly dramatic, or maybe just because we’re simply in love with the music and the festival environment. Whatever the case may be, most of us go through a withdrawal period spanning from a few days to a few weeks. It makes sense though, because the hype continues to prolong with each year. If you haven’t noticed, Ultra Music Festival tickets went on sale in May this year as opposed to in October. We'll admit it— many of us are spoiled, and many of us demand the best of the best. With productions that promise to outdo themselves each consecutive year, we can’t help but to get overly excited for a major festival a year in advance. But those three (in this case, two) days pass by so quickly that when it finally ends, we think to ourselves, “F*ck. It’s already over?” The buildup is intense, but the comedown back to reality hits you harder than you’d think. Particularly with the abrupt ending to Electric Zoo.
Yes, you read that correctly- a couple got engaged this past weekend at Electric Zoo and two of their wildest dreams became a reality. For Chris, it was important that he made the ultimate proposal to his girlfriend of a little over three years, Ashley. And what better way to do so than with the help of Above & Beyond? If you were at the Zoo last week and saw A&B's set, you may remember that during "A Thing Called Love," the LED wall behind them read: "Chris, @TheDJBF WOULD LOVE TO MARRY Ashley, @DJGFProblems." Well, she said "yes," albeit a teary "yes." We found Chris on Twitter thanks to one of our contributors, Jessica Ekman, and decided to ask the couple a few questions to lighten the mood surrounding Electric Zoo. As they say below, "The music we so dearly love is not about drugs and death. It’s about magic, dance, love and bringing people together." Read on to learn their story, and gain a different perspective on Ezoo and electronic dance music in general that oftentimes, we fail to remember.

Ministry of Sound recently released the highly anticipated Trance Nation album, mixed by the father of trance himself, Lange. Between this and the release of his third artist album at the end of this year, the DJ and producer is staying very busy. Lange took some time to fill us in on the mixing of Trance Nation and the exciting year ahead.
What was your reaction when first presented with the opportunity to mix Trance Nation for Ministry of Sound?
