Every good foodie has scoffed at the idea of eating the mystery meat served in most cafeterias, but what if that meat was genetically engineered from stem cells? So, it’s meat. Truly, but kind of, sort of not. Our apologies to the Fleur Burger 5000, test tube hamburger patties may have just taken the prize for the world’s most expensive hamburger coming in at a staggering price of $350,000 (there's a $355,000 price different between the two).
By now everyone has heard of the Knicks’ new star player, Jeremy Lin, and if you haven’t, he may pop up at your favorite eatery very soon in the form of a special. Lin has revived the Knicks fan base with his ever growing popularity by both his story and skill. Now New York City restaurants have joined in the support of their hometown team and their new favorite point guard by dedicating dishes and other menu items to Lin.
City-wide Linsanity has taken hold, at Danny Meyer’s Shake Shack grab a Lintastic take on the classic mint chocolate chip cookie, the Jeremy Lin-mint Shake for $5.75. As the promotional sign clearly states, the shake “is Lin it to win it.”
Most might not have noticed given its proximity to Burger Royalty otherwise known as Shake Shack in Madison Square Park, but in 2009 a new burger place opened called Fresh & Fast Burgers. It's a small establishment with colors resembling more of a McDonald's instead of a real NYC burger spot. There are no tables, but rather a small counter to sit on to go along with its very simple menu. Despite all of these apparent shortcomings, I visited the place back when it opened and found the burgers to be rather delightful, albeit not anything special. Enter new owner, Heath Wolfson.
The Third Annual Burgie Awards are returning to South Florida this November! The event will be held at the new Magic City Casino on Saturday, November 19th where several burger experts will be competing for awards such as: “Best Burger 2011”, “Best BBQ Joint”, “Best Fries”, “Best Desert” and “Best Food Truck.” All kinds of Specialty Burger Restaurants will be grilling on site while awaiting the results. Newer restaurants and landmark restaurants alike: Burger and Beer Joint in South Beach, Tobacco Road from Brickell, The Local from Coral Gables and Pincho Factory located in Westchester.
Burgers are the omnipresent food of our culture; they are everywhere. The iconic American sandwich is fancy, fast, fattening, delicious, and accesible. Therefore the availablity and array of different versions of burgers is a tad overwhelming. These days you can find a burger on almost any menu made from a myriad of different proteins. Up-scale, fine-dining establishments serve burgers that cost more than twenty dollars, dripping in foie gras and artisanal cheese. McDonalds offers it's beloved Big Mac for roughly $3.60. Because burgers are so versatile, there is a lot of room for error out there. But there are also fantastic renditions of the beefy classic that stick with us long after the ketchup stains fade. And since not everyone can afford Hubert Keller's $75 truffle burger at Fleur de Lys in Las Vegas, we've compiled a list of our favorite "middle-of-the-road" burgers. Hamburgers that are made of high-quality beef, topped with fresh vegetables and condiments but served on a tray or in a bag. This is the best of the cheap beef. Fries and onion rings are extra.
For those of you who are tired of spending $20+ dollars on a gourmet burger, “Pop’s Dollar Food Shop” may have a solution for you. This low-key Midtown spot lies in the back of a pizza and gyro restaurant and is offering $1, we repeat, $1, burgers. It was opened by Fox Goodman on the belief that people should be able to have access to quality food at low prices. The most expensive item on the menu? A bacon double cheeseburger for a meager $3. Every burger is complete with cooked onions, ketchup, pickles, and cheese that will only cost you an extra 25 cents. The rolls are freshly baked every day, and the taste (they claim) is better than that of traditional fast food chains like McDonald’s and Burger King. The eatery also offers hot dogs and fries at the same competitive prices. The major gripe of the patrons was portion size, but each complaint was quickly justified by the joint's low prices. And hey, if you’re still hungry, another burger is only a buck away.

The hamburger is considered by many the world over to almost single-handedly represent American cuisine, which is a pretty awesome feat considering the size and diversity of this country. Any attempt at researching the origin of the hamburger can turn into a wild goose chase with different individuals, restaurants, cities, and states claiming ownership to the creation of the modern hamburger. This goes to show just how important the hamburger is to not only our gastronomic heritage, but our cultural heritage, as well. Besides being tasty, portable, and relatively simple to prepare, the hamburger provides us with the one thing Americans really crave: freedom of expression.
