Fall 2012 Preview: 5 Trends to Get Your Hands On

White is the New Black

What do you wear when you have nothing to wear? The go-to, monochromatic, sartorial fallback of an all black look, of course. This season, designers (literally, almost all of them) have presented a “brighter” option for our old monochromatic standby, showing head to toe winter-ready white in the form of chic eveningwear, tailored pantsuits and everything in between. Lyn Devon goes super sweet and retro chic with a modest angora sweater and tea-length duchesse satin skirt. Cushnie et Ochs offer winter white separates as sleek tailored trousers paired with a sheer collared top make the trend as seductive as their curve-hugging dresses. Alexander Wang doesn’t disappoint with his edgy twist, detailed with pearlescent fringe and black fishnet stockings.

Frilly, Girly Pastels

Winter is officially over, so really, there's no need for those dreary black clothes anymore. (Uh-hm, New York?) Yes, we're guilty of too much black as well, so don't feel bad. Memorial Day weekend starts tomorrow so now is the perfect time to spring into summer with a lighter wardrobe.

We're not saying you have to swear-off black completely, but it's getting far too warm and lovely for all the darkness. It's time to add pastels to your rotation -stat! Soft yellows, pinks, lavenders, sky blues and mint green should be finding a place in your closet right about now. It's all about flowy, girly, light and sheer fabrics.

Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen: Making A Name

If anyone knows anything about double features in fashion, it’s Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. Starting at just 6 months old, these actresses-turned-designers have been in the spotlight their entire lives. At just age 10, they entered the fashion industry revealing their “marykateandashley” line, and within the past few years have evolved tremendously. At the close of 2010, they had put their skills to use with not one, but three fashion lines: The Row, Elizabeth and James, and Olsenboye.

Jessie Boutique: One Stop Shop

Being new to the Miami scene, I found myself staying away from that pesky mall traffic and searching for a good clothing boutique...a.k.a my oasis. One afternoon, while looking for my birthday get-up, I stumbled upon Jessie Boutique in South Beach and found more than I bargained for. Upon entering, I was welcomed by gracious sales girls and racks upon racks of dresses, skirts, shorts, tops, and denim, along with a nice assortment of jewelry and accessories. Well-known brands such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Halston Heritage, Foley & Corinna, and Elizabeth and James can be found making their home here along with some fresh up-and-comers like Patterson J. Kincaid, Haute Hippie, Aaron Ashe, and Dallin Chase. With the great selection and wide range of prices ($38-$595) to choose from, this trip that I had set aside two hours for suddenly became a twenty minute breeze. Dress and accessories in hand, I walked out happily knowing that this wasn’t going to be my last trip here.

Be Twice As Stylish With a Two-Finger Ring

Want to add some edginess to your look? The two-finger ring is your style solution. Stars from Rihanna to Lauren Conrad have been seen sporting this ‘80s cool-girl accessory, and you can have one too. Keep it simple with a sterling silver bar ring, like this one by Elizabeth and James ($95, Bloomingdales.com) or glam it up with some spikes, like this ring from new jewelry designer Amanda Thomas, recently featured on WhoWhatWear ($100, LuvAJ.com). You can even create a custom ring with your name on it, as L.C. did in the picture above, on accessory designer Melody Ehsani’s website.

Dress Like the Boys

The ratio of the amount of clothes men own to the amount women own can get a bit ridiculous- just peek in your brother, father, boyfriend, husband, or friend’s closet and you’ll see. Theirs is a small corner of neatly arranged (well, in theory) shirts, slacks, jackets and shorts with a few pairs of shoes thrown in. While, I will agree, this is not nearly as exciting as a closet full of sky high heels, gold lame trench coats, and cocktail dresses that really fit only a handful of occasions, the simplicity of a man’s closet is something we can learn from.

Men and women alike tend to wear certain wardrobe staples over and over again- we just tend to have more of these staples and have more options to update them from outfit to outfit. Having these three basics- essentials, rather- that a. fit well, and b. are of high enough quality they can last through several seasons, will make getting dressed in the morning as easy as 1-2-3.

Mary-Kate's Trash Look Still Winning..

If it weren't for the way Mary-Kate Olsen feels the need to intentionally don everything in such a tacky way, we probably wouldn't have known the Lanvin Fall 2009 dress coat had hidden buttons.

But, we thank her for that.

And we die over her need to be a bag lady. Let's hope she has on a backpack as well.

I guess there's nothing left to do but sit and wait to watch her wear Olsenboye.
