A fusion of hip-hop, house, funk, and soul has become the trademark of a select few artists and producers who have been taking the electronic music scene by storm, and 23 year old Detroit native and classically trained saxophonist GRiZ is leading the charge.
The Rebel Era of music is just getting started, and Grant Kwiecinski a.k.a. GRiZ, between working on side projects with Gramatik and founding his own Liberated Music label, plans to keep feeding his soul-infused electronic sound to the masses with the release of a new EP followed by a massive North American tour.
Modern electronic dance music seems to be split into two complementary aesthetics, unified by a common timbral interest. On one hand, we have a super clean production style that seeks to take advantage of the pristine sonic clarity available only in the purely mathematical environment provided by computers. On the other, we have an approach that favors vintage, gritty, dare we say soulful sounds and effects to inject warmth and humanity into digital soundscapes whose cutting precision too often feels cold upon the ears. This past Friday at Terminal 5, we here at Joonbug were pleased to experience an expert presentation of this dichotomy with a stop on The Rebel Era Tour, with Pegboard Nerds representing the former camp, and headliner GRiZ and The Floozies aligned with the latter.
