June is Pride Month, and Pride Month means a month chock full of fun to support a great cause. Yet without the helping hands of a lot of socially conscious New Yorkers, many of these fun events would not be possible. Here is a roundup of some of the charitable events taking place in June around New York in support of the LGBT community this year. The LGBT Community Center will be hosting a number of events throughout the month which includes a free book signing on June 21 for Amira Shaunice's "Silence: Complete Journey" as well as their big A Taste of Pride Garden Party 30 on June 24 . One of the biggest event listed on their calendar though is amfAR's Inspiration Gala New York from 6:30pm until 11pm on Thursday, June 13th. This is a huge event for the LGBT community and has helped raise awareness for the gay community and $6 million so far for the Foundation for AIDS Research. The Gala will be a glamorous, star-studded event that will feature a live performance by Carly Rae Jepsen, special guests Alexa Chung and Liza Minnelli, as well as a live DJ set by The Dolls (Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe). The honorees for this year's Gala are Valentino, Jennifer Lopez, and Alan Cumming. There are only a limited amount of tickets so be sure to get them while you can. The LGBT Community Center is located at 208 West 13th Street.
With a shining bright smile, a short blonde 9-year-old boy named Luke Spring opened the evening with an impressive tap dance number, riling up the crowd like a smokey cabaret lounge cheering on a young prodigy.
For 30 years, the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards have been honoring the dancers and choreographers that have gone over looked by mainstream recognition.
As producer and welcoming speaker and Patricia Watt puts it, "We're here in the middle of awards season and dancers have yet to be recognized. Well, we're here to change all that."
June 4th brings the 30th Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards to NYU at the Skirball Center for Performing Arts at 7:30pm. Liza Minnelli will be honored with its Douglas Watt Lifetime Achievement Award! We all know Liza (who didn't love her in recent endeavour Arrested Development?), winner of four Tony Awards, an Oscar, a special "Legends" Grammy, two Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy. Now that's impressive. In film, television, and on stage, Liza has won critical acclaim, as well as a following of fans.
