Culture Club threw its grand reopening party last night, and they certainly did it right! With a Michael Jackson impersonator, non-stop '80s music, and themed drinks like "Vanilla Ice," "Bon Jovi," and "Smurfirita," attendees were cutting a rug like they were the stars of Footloose. The multi-level club featured Saturday Night Fever inspired floors, paintings of yester-year, and plenty of neon colors. With the help of partner Debbie Gibson, VnC Cocktails, and South Beach Smoke, the bash was one of the most colorful (literally and figuratively) so far this year. We even got a surprise live performance from Debbie Gibson of Shake Your Love and Only in my Dreams. Notables in attendance included Kourtney Kardashian, VnC ambassador Scott Disick, Nanette Lepore (who also designed the club's uniforms!), Project Runway’s Joshua McKinley, DJ Kiss, DJ M.O.S, and Mick Boogie.
Michael "Laws" Maldonado is a Brazilian-born, Florida raised hip hop artist who signed with the Grammy award winning producer trio J.U.S.T.I.C.E League in 2009. Laws started rhyming when he was 16 and made his way into the rapping realm by competing in and winning lyrical face-offs. He eventually elevated from battler to songwriter and crafted music that caught the attention of Rook, a member of J.U.S.T.I.C.E League's production team. After conversing via AOL Instant Messenger, the two met up, hit the studio, and produced Laws' first mixtape that earned him comparisons to iconic rapper Eminem.
October 26 marked the debut of the Brooklyn Acadaemy of Music's presentation of Persephone, the classic Greek myth, staring Julia Stiles, as part of their Next Wave Festival. To celebrate the kick-off, the cast, crew and friends sauntered their way down to Deity, the bi-level, allegorically themed downtown Brooklyn hotspot, where appetizers and drinks were provided, as well as a crowd-pleasing, top-40 fueled DJ set by Mick Boogie in the lower level of the venue.
"There were lot of nerves, but it was very fun," said star Julia Stiles, clad in a long, pomergranate-red dress, putting down her drink on the bar, tugging at the sides of her outfit. "I'm glad to be part of the whole performance. It's such an honor to be performing at the Harvey Theatre. I was standing on stage today, saying, 'You guys have no idea who has performed here!'"
