CULINARY OCCASIONS
The Brooklyn Local

Last Saturday, City Harvest fed Brooklynites at a fun-filled fundraising event featuring artisanal food and activities. The event was held at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park from 11am-6pm and what a day it was! The weather cooperated with City Harvest and had event-goers leaving happy and completely full.

Over 75 artisanal vendors were in attendance, showcasing their delicious snacks-- from craft beer and wine to local and gourmet food items. There was also a Tasting Tent with private seating, featuring food and drinks from some of Brooklyn's best venues, including Benchmark Restaurant, Momofuku Milk Bar, The Good Fork, and more. The Tasting Tent was curated by Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli of Frankies Spuntino and Prime Meats.

NYC Restaurant Roundup

Welcome to the First Course Restaurant Roundup where we'll share our Top 5 new places to dine out right now. This list is ever changing so be sure to look back for our latest insights. In the meantime, check out these new locales that promise to be worth their pricetag. This week's focus: Second (and Third) Editions

The Smith- You've been to this East Village comfort food haunt for a late night dinner or maybe an early morning (and slightly hurting) breakfast. Next week you can pop in there while you work at their new midtown location. Grub Street leaked that the spot will open as early as 7am and will (hopefully soon) offer delivery. Summer BBQ Blowout Coverage

As the name implies, barbecue was the challenge and a few standouts stepped up to it with their sample plates. Namely, the team behind Dos Torros with their succulent shreds of pork layered into a warm soft taco with melted cheese, a heap of fresh pineapple guacamole and a generous squeeze of sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. Also supremely savory was the grilled baby quail from Dizzy's Club set atop a delicious yogurt-dressed slaw with a juicy Mandarin orange wedge. (I most certainly had seconds from each of these contenders, but let's keep that on the down-low.)

If you were there, you know what I'm talking about. If you weren't, let these photos paint a picture for your palate.

BROOKLYN
Give A 'Hoot' For Brooklyn Star

After being damaged by a fire, The Brooklyn Star's doors have remained closed since last month. With the help and donations of fellow industry professionals, Brooklyn Kitchen Lab is able to host The Brooklyn Star Hootenanny, a party to benefit the damaged Williamsburg treasure.

Through the charitable donations of food and beverages from fellow hospitality establishments, this hootenanny will bring The Brooklyn Star one step closer to a swift reopening. Beer, donated from Brooklyn Brewery, and whiskey, from Wilfie & Nell and Whiskey Town, will bring a tipsy fun to the party. Smoked meats come from the Brooklyn Lab Kitchens' partner, The Meat Hook. Chef and owner Joaquin Baca, formally partnered with Momofuku Milk Bar, is also having the famed bakery donate sweets for the event.

CARROT CAKE ICE CREAM
Cake Turns Ice Cream at Momofuku Milk Bar

Even though it is Friday, I cannot wait until Sunday. Not my most favorite day, Sunday, the signal of the end of the weekend, is actually the beginning of something amazing, and I predict to be utterly delicious. Momofuku Bakery & Milk Bar will be debuting their cake-to-ice cream soft serve flavors of Red Velvet Cake, Carrot Cake, and Cream Cheese Frosting ice cream. Smooth, creamy, and rich, these ice cream flavors are like frozen frosting, and we all know frosting is the best part.

CHIKALICIOUS
Martha Stewart on the Lower East Side? What?

It seems that Martha Stewart has momentarily set aside her love of 46th street, and moved a bit further downtown, selecting 10th street as her new favorite hotspot of culinary expertise. In a four-part restaurant tour kicking off Monday on "The Martha Stewart Show" the domestic diva is visiting a quartet of tiny downtown eateries on E. 10th Street.

"I have never been on a street anywhere in New York where restaurant after restaurant is just so, so good," says Stewart, citing diverse menus and fantastic prices as reasons for her latest food fixation.

Stewart's interest with the lower east side started during the summer, when she and Lisa Wagner, supervising producer for the show, visited Graffiti, pastry chef Jehangir Mehta's tiny, four-table restaurant serving global small plates. "Frequently, I'll be out with Martha and we'll say, "Hey, this would be a great thing for TV,' " says Wagner.
