When we walked into Ruby’s on Mulberry Street, we were surprised that this dorm-room sized establishment could be considered a restaurant. An Asian Joseph Gordon Levitt greeted us with a dimply smile and led us to one of the five tables. We were disappointed to learn that not only were they out of the Sangria special, but that the Cravat special that was advertised was “not good”. We called it a day and ordered Pinot Grigio. It came in plastic cups, which at least gave us a good laugh. The adventurous eater in us ordered what appeared to be the house speciality, the Whaleys Burger. It consisted of premium ground beef, tomato, lettuce, beets, pineapple, a fried egg, and ketchup. It came with a side salad and instead of a traditional bun, the delicious creation was nestled between two pieces of Focaccia bread. The flavors were totally unique, even the burger meat tasted different from anything we’ve ever tried. We didn’t mind that there was no cheese, in fact it probably would have detracted from the overall flavor. Each component came together harmoniously to create a great sandwich. It was all-in-all a delightful meal. Cash only!

Tomorrow at 5:30 pm,, City Winery is hosting Farm to Table, an interactive tasting event that will be held at the Courtyard in Hudson Square. The tasting stations will be prepared by Great Performances, and there will also be a selection of City Winery’s own handcrafted wines. All food is from within a 100-mile radius of New York City with a menu committed to celebrating local produce. Some menu highlights: Hudson Valley Duck Feast, Stuffed Peppers, Family Style Toasts, Ratatouille, and Fennel and Artichoke salad.
Last week, House Beautiful and KitchenAid hosted Kitchen of the Year with Celebrity Chef (and our current crush) Tyler Florence. Held in Rockefeller Center, the event took place in a demo kitchen designed by the man himself, with plenty of outdoor seating and Tyler’s (yes, we’re on a first name basis) own wine to keep guests hydrated.
Tucked away on Lafayette Street, Osteria Morini is one of the best restaurants that we’ve tried this summer. A creation by celebrated chef Michael White, this spot did everything right, from the décor, to the friendly and accommodating waitstaff, to, most importantly, the food. Dim lighting and brick walls set the mood, and communal tables and mismatched chairs and mirrors give Morini a unique coziness that is sometimes forgotten by restaurants that are trying too hard to be “different”.
Don’t be fooled by its name, this place is not your average corner coffee joint. Smack in the middle of the bustling Union Square, Coffee Shop has a steady stream of patrons trickling in all day and well into the evening. The hoards of people are a testament to Coffee Shop’s popularity, which is mostly due to their great food, low prices, and hip bar scene.
The noise level is inexplicably high, so if you’re looking for a quiet night out we don’t recommend it. But, if you can handle it, we suggest you order the Greek Salad. Fresh lettuce, feta cheese, ripe tomatoes, and cucumbers are dressed in a light summer dressing. Around the outside are four balls of lightly fried falafel that have a great flavor. We also recommend trying out one of their Deluxe Burgers. We tried the Char Grilled Turkey Burger on a Toasted Potato Bun with a little added avocado to complement the juicy burger. There are tons of toppings and options to choose from, including 4 types of cheese, bacon, avocado, or fried onions.

With Restaurant Week nearing its end, we figured we better make a reservation and fast. We ended up choosing Celebrity Chef Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill. We’ve always been a fan of Mr. Flay but had never been there, and we were eager and excited to check it out.
What a disappointment. We decided to forgo the uninspired Restaurant Week menu and instead chose a few items from the regular dinner menu. To start, we ordered the Fresh Cut Tuna Nachos and the Cremini Mushroom Quesadillas. These were the best things that we ate, the tuna nachos were paired with some delicious tortilla chips and we enjoyed the ceviche-like feel of the tuna. The Cremini Mushroom Quesadilla was tasty as well; it was topped with Fontina and Ricotta cheese and a fried egg, and had a nice flavor.
The small space is almost unnoticeable from the outside. But inside, Sweet Revenge is packed with people. The extensive menu at this cupcake, wine, and beer bar may seem a little overwhelming at first, but don’t worry; friendly staff is available with suggestions.
Entrepreneur Marlo Scott created Sweet Revenge in 2007 and has been getting showered with accolades ever since. The space is cozy and warm, with a long dark wood bar and small café tables for patrons.
Tuesday, some of the most celebrated chefs from the East Village gathered at the James Beard House for East Village Social. The walk around tasting featured cuisine from Edi & the Wolf, Jimmy’s No. 43, Cienfuego, Death & Co., Mayahuel, Jack’s Luxury Oyster Bar, PDT, Grafitti, Metaphor, and Goat Town.
