A Taste of Home's 3rd Annual Benefit

The third annual A Taste of Home benefit was co-hosted by celebrity chef, Alex Guarnaschelli, and famous food writer, Ruth Reichl, at the Housing Works Bookstore this past Monday. The culinary-themed benefit featured hors d’oeuvres by The Works catering chef, Paul Buese, and stationary bites from Michael White and Bill Dorrler (Altamarea Group), Gabe Thompson (L’Artusi dell’anima, Anfora), Josh Capon (Lure Fishbare, B&B Winepub), Brendan McHale (Tasting Table) and Ivy Start (Dos Caminos). All proceeds from the benefit went to supporting the Housing Works’ mission of providing services for homeless and low-income people living with HIV/AIDs.

Gilt Taste is Thirsty and Pretty

Gilt Taste, home to the $150 Pantry Essential Kit, recently launched a Wine section that appears equally pricey. The veritable vino will be chosen by a panel made up of some of the youngest and most noteworthy sommeliers in the country.

Gourmet Going Under

Condé Nast announced today that its venerable Gourmet magazine, which has been published for nearly 69 years, will be ceasing publication. A dramatic decline in ad pages was specuated to threaten either Gourmet or Bon Appétit, but due to Gourmet’s longevity and upstanding editor-in-chief (Ruth Reichl, recipient of four James Beard Awards) few suspected it to be the one to go. In 2008, Gourmet lost nearly 25% of its ad pages, and in 2009 conditions only worsened. Nevertheless, the cut comes as a huge blow to the print media industry and the culinary world alike, not to mention its now unemployed editorial staff.
