Talib Kweli Reveals 'Prisoner of Conscious' Details

Earlier this year, rap veteran Talib Kweli released the solo album Gutter Rainbows, a title inspired by Catcher in The Rye, which was completely self-financed and independent of the mainstream record industry. Kweli is known for chasing the thrill of a new project where ever and whenever it might come up, and to keep with his chameleon style, he recently announced his plans to follow up Gutter Rainbows with another album before the year is over.

Prisoner of Conscious is Kweli’s next project in the making and the collection is rumored to be something of an extremely late sequel to 2007’s Ear Drum. So far there’s been word of guest features from his Black Star partner Mos Def, as well as top dogs Curren$y, Kendrick Lamar, Jean Grae, Maino, and uh, randomly, Nelly?

Rock The Bells 2011: Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Cypress Hill, and More!

This year's Rock The Bells 2011 lineup is absolutely ridiculous, in the best sense of the word. This four-city run festival may just be the greatest hip-hop festival of the year.

Last summer Rock The Bells featured several headliner artists who performed their most legendary albums in their entirety for the first time in the history of hip-hop entertainment. Such artists included Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, and the Wu-Tang Clan. This year the traditional will continue with Ms. Lauryn Hill performing her multi-platinum, multi-Grammy winning album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Nas performing his iconic debut album Illmatic with special guests AZ, Pete Rock, and DJ Premier. That act alone will be far and beyond mind blowing. Want more? You got it. Also set to perform full album sets are Cypress Hill, Mos Def & Talib Kweli (Black Star), and Raekwon & Ghostface. DJ Pete Rock and Q-Tip Get Down at Deity

"It's my family down here," said Talib Kweli, who made a surprise appearance and was seated beyond the rot-iron gate and hexagonal bar, under the vibrant stain-glassed portraits of naked women in the dark, swanky, dropped-down VIP lounge at Deity in Brooklyn on Friday September 17, where DJ Pete Rock and Q-Tip performed for I Love Chocolate, a hip-hop fueled night dedicated to high-class drinks, a lively crowd, and even more enthusiastic music.

It's no wonder why over 300 people packed into the acclaimed downtown Brooklyn venue, a central spot for neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy, DUMBO, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, and Cobble Hill. DJ Pete Rock has been a driving force in the New York hip-hop scene since the early 1990s, with heavy collaborations with The Wu-Tang Clan, gaining acclaim with his innovative integration of jazz and funk influences into the gritty, street hip-hop of the day.
