Clean hip-hop, you say? That’s right, the proverbial pig has taken flight. The newest Radikal Records artist, I.O.U., is pumping some serious, clean and dare we say it? ...inspiring (we dared) hip-hop on their new album, The Soul & The Intellect. Hailing from New Jersey, I.O.U. Is Isaiah “Izee” McNeill and Andrew “Buck” Buckner, who's focus on sending out positive vibes have found them opening for superstars like Far East Movement and Big Sean. We recently spoke with Izee and Buck about their influences, conquering fears, and more...
The highly anticipated debut album of Dovetail, the 2012 recipients of the John Lennon Songwriting Award, is out today, October 29th. Aptly titled, Mount Karma, the lyrics on the album are mindful of personal journeys traveled by the band mates, which are then paired with complex and inspiring instrumentals. This combination, in tandem with a steadily increasing fan base, positions Dovetail to be one of the next big break-out bands.
With the eerily realistic resurrection of Tupac via hologram at Coachella this past weekend, we couldn't help but imagine what it would be like to see more of our favorite lost legends come back to life. What we'd pay to see them in the flesh (kinda) once more! This is an open letter to the Hologram Gods, here's a list of icons you need to get to work on next. Chop chop.

Guernsey's is putting on the auction of a lifetime. The auction house, known for many prestigious offerings, including items and paraphernalia of Princess Diana, Mickey Mantle, John F. Kennedy, and many more, is putting on a rock 'n' roll auction, with one-of-a-kind items. The auction will take place September 24th and 25th and there will be a chance to preview the auction on the 23rd.
I was able to snag an exclusive interview with Arlan Ettinger, President of Guernsey's, about the upcoming auction. Head to the auction on Saturday to bid on (or watch others) the famous Manny's Music original inscribed photographs of celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin, and The Rolling Stones. Manny's Music was an iconic store that contained thousands of signed photographs of music's biggest names. Also on Saturday will be original photographs of The Beatles, outfits from the band Kiss, and original letters and artwork by John Lennon.
Sunday will be dedicated to Astrid Kirchherr's original photographs of The Beatles. Astrid, who was engaged to Stuart Sutcliffe before his untimely death, produced some of the most iconic photos of The Beatles ever taken. There are nearly 1000 photos being auctioned, along with the negatives and copyrights to the photos.
How exactly does an auction like this come together? Arlan divulged that he was contacted about a year ago to meet with Astrid in Germany. Ettinger, who has been doing auctions for over 35 years, has spent his career building relationships and has learned to deal sensitively with the sentimental items of others. It took nine months to put together this particular auction.
There has been great interest in this event, from people all over the world. Luckily, with the help of LiveAuctioneers.com, people may now bid in real time from wherever they are, so even if you can't make it to good ol' NYC, you can still acquire a piece of history. People of all ages (including celebs) bid at these fun events. Check out some of the items to be auctioned!
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of her debut CD, Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys threw a ground shaking show at the Beacon Theatre appropriately titled, Piano and I. Alicia looked wonderful as always up on the stage alongside candles and her baby grand piano; with such exceptional talent, she didn't need much else.
The evening showcased a few cover numbers, which the songstress made her own, including Mary J. Blige's 'Real Love.' Alicia's powerful vocals and star studded performance engaged the audience as everyone sang along. She also included covers from Billy Joel, Brian McKnight, Marvin Gaye, and a prelude of the Beatles' song, 'Blackbird.'
February, 1964 - The Beatles make a rush for the talent entrance at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City, weeding their way through swarms of screaming teenage girls. They wowed the nation with five songs, live on the Ed Sullivan Show; "All My Loving", "Til There Was You" and "She Loves You" opened the show while "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" closed it. The night became known as a milestone in television history with roughly 73 million viewers glued to their screens across the country. The British Invasion had officially begun, and the black suited boys from Liverpool had jump started it.
The crosswalk made famous by The Beatles back in 1969, where the quartet are pictured walking across the zebra striped Abbey Road, was recently declared a historic landmark by the British government. The Abbey Road music studio was also declared a landmark back in February.
This year we witnessed a sudden surge in Beatles popularity, with the release of their music on iTunes and celebrations of John Lennon’s life in honor of the 30th anniversary of his death and what would have been his 70th birthday.
For the first time since iTunes started selling music online in 2003, the Beatles--probably the most awaited band to be featured for purchase--is finally available, in its entirety, for a mere $150.
And $150 gets you a lot. The Beatles Box Set yields pretty much everything the band ever produced, including all their studio albums, the Past Masters collection, all A and B sides, and a lot of extra goodies, including photos and documentaries. The freebies that go along with the inclusion of the Beatles on iTunes, too, are notable, featuring old-school advertisements, numerous videos, and a documentary of the band's first concert in the United States.
Unkle is not a traditional band. People come in and out like in a hostel. The band was first an abstarct hip-hop team but it has evolved to something hybrid with rock notes. It nows doesn't belong to a specific musical genre. You maybe remember them because of the famous Nike sneakers made for the band. You probably know because you like Dj Shadow or noisy rock. As you can see there are many reasons to know Unkle and come to the show.
Heres is a non-exhaustive list of the musicians who worked in this band : James Lavelle, Richard File, Geoff Barrow from Portishead, Dj Shadow, Thom Yorke from Radiohead, Mike D from Beastie Boys, Richard Ashcroft, Richard Filem, 3D from Massive Attack, Ian Brown and Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, Gavin Clarck and Ian Astbury from The Cult, Pablo Clements from The Psychonauts... shall I continue ?
Saturday would have marked the 70th birthday of John Lennon, arguably the best musician to have ever lived. Sadly, this could not be due to his untimely death by way of assassination by a crazed fan on December 8, 1980. Thirty years later, Lennon is still remembered by his fans from that to this generation - his musical legacy lives on.
To celebrate his life, crowds of fans from all over the world gathered around the famed Strawberry Fields memorial in New York on Saturday to sing his songs and to pay homage to a man who devoted his life to making music and promoting world peace.
