One of the most creative ways a person can express themselves is through clothing. Fashion and all that we adorn ourselves with has been an ever-changing craft since humans first felt the need to protect their more private areas from the harsh elements. Of course clothing is special. They’re things we hold close to our bodies and yet they’re also among the first things others notice about us. They’re a reminder that we are exposed, and nearly everyone puts a little bit of their internal in these externals. It’s no wonder, then, that a dress can be found in any color, fabric, print, or texture. We’ve seen dresses that could light up, dresses made of food, dresses that double as pieces of technology, and more. Artist and fashion design student Sopi Su has created a dress that’s literally an outpour of human thought and creativity.

She calls the project The Imperfections. Inspired by a book by the Japanese author Sei Shonagon, called The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, Su wanted to capture her observations of the world around her in a way that was personal. Much of her self and her experiences go into her work, and she wanted to create something that showed it. The imperfections of modern life stood out to Su and the words poured out onto paper in a really unique way. Su, after carefully choosing the typography, laser cut words, sentences, and phrases she found meaningful from paper. She then strung those words together in the shape of a dress.

The piece she created is at once highly personal and something meant to be taken in with the eyes, almost scrutinized. This extremely delicate armor is made of written expression. Language and the visual are combined into one, in a piece designed to make us see the flawed. Its title, The Imperfections, cues thoughts of what each viewer may find personally wrong with themselves or in others. It’s a really beautiful and provocative piece, created by a really talented young artist!
