Where to find the best bourbon cocktails in NYC and do it yourself recipes to celebrate National Bourbon Month

It's all about the bourbon this September, when we all get to celebrate National Bourbon Month. Nix your typical vodka cocktails for some strong brown spirits. We've let you know where the most innovative and delicious bourbon cocktails are served around the city, as well as DIY recipes to try on your own. Good luck and enjoy! 

Lowcountry serves up a plethora of bourbon laden 'tails. Try out their Lowcountry Old Fashioned (Four Roses Bourbon, Orange, Brandy Cherry), Bourbon Dark & Stormy (Rebel Yell Bourbon, Lime, Ginger Beer, Molasses), Sazarac (Johnny Drum Bourbon, Absinthe, Orange Bitter), Triple-B (Blueberry Shrub, Buffalo Trace, Bourbon, St. Germain, Cava), Lowcountry Iced Tea (Firefly Sweet Tea Bourbon, Mint, Lemon, Blackberry Shrub), Ginger Julep (Johnny Drum Bourbon, Jalapeno, Ginger, Mint, Ginger Ale), and last but not least, the Vanilla Chai Manhattan (Vanilla Chai infused Bourbon, Sweet Vermout, Brown Sugar). The Tangled Vine offers two essential bourbon cocktails, The Amsterdam Ave (1792 Ridgemont Reserve Bourbon, Cherry Heering, Maraschino Liquor, lemon, $14) and the Collins (1792 Bourbon, lemon, club soda, $12). Northeast Kingdom in Bushwick let's patrons try out their Old Bushwick Cocktail (Jim Beam, bitters, lime, $9), while Casa Nonna makes The Tuscan (Woodford Reserve Bourbon, peach honey syrup, Marreti Biscotti liquor, bitters, $14).

Alobar celebrates Whiskey Tuesday every week, with specialty cocktails for just $8. Sip on their Bacon Whiskey Sour (Bacon infused Bourbon, egg white, maple syrup, lemon juice) or Vernon Smash (Bourbon, blackberries, mint, ginger beer) or try a more classic drink like their Mint Julep, Manhattan, or Old Fashioned. Highpoint Bistro & Bar serves both their Blood Orange Old Fashion (Maker's Mark, blood orange) and Whiskey Smash (Jim Beam, Granny Smith apple) for $12. 508 Gastrobrewery delights customers with their $13 drink The Jockey (Bourbon, mint, acai, lemon). The Bowery Hotel Lobby invites its guests to slurp down their Black Manhattan (Bulleit Bourbon, Averna, bitters) for $17 as they enjoy the cozy fireplace during these increasingly chilly Fall nights. A.G. Kitchen offers a completely unique cocktail called Peanut Envy (peanut-infused Buffalo Trace Bourbon, liqueur, muddled dill, fresh lime) for just $12.

The Stinton (by Canard Inc.)

2oz Bourbon                 Maraschino Cherry, for garnish

1/2oz Sweet Vermouth

2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Splash Seltzer

 

Combine the bourbon, vermouth & bitters in a cocktail shaker.  Shake well, strain into an old fashioned glass and top with a splash of seltzer.  Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

 Punch Drunk Punch (by Canard Inc.)

1/2 gallon cider            1Tbsp lemon juice

1 Tbsp Mulling Spice    1 Cup bourbon

speel of 1 orange         1 bottle sparkling wine

1/2 cup Orange Juice                        

Combine cider, mull spices & orange peel and cook on low for 20 minutes. Strain & let cool.  Add orange juice, lemon juice, bourbon, sparkling wine.  Garnish with lemon & orange slices studded with cloves.

3 oz. Bourbon

1 tsp. fig and bayleaf marmalade

0.5 oz. honey

0.5 oz. lemon juice

                                    1-2 tsp. hibiscus grenadine to brighten up the boozy flavors

In a shaker, combine Bourbon, fig, bayleaf marmalade, honey, lemon juice, and hibiscus grenadine. Shake vigorously and serve over ice.

Manhattan (Dry)

1.5oz Kentucky Whiskey


0.5oz MARTINI Extra Dry  vermouth


1 dash of Orange Bitter

 

Stir over ice. Strain in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with cherry maraschino.

 

 

Brooklyn

 

1/2oz. Kentucky Whiskey                 1/4oz Maraschino Liquor

 

0.5oz MARTINI Extra Dry vermouth    1 dash of Orange Bitter

 

0.5oz Amer Picon

 

 

 

Stir over ice. Strain in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with cherry maraschino.

2 oz Bourbon                 1 oz passionfruit juice

0.5 oz lemon juice          1/4 oz campari

0.5 oz maple syrup        1 tsp honey

1 oz fresh organic apple juice                                  

In a shaker, combine all ingredients. Shake vigorously and serve over ice. 

 

MIDTOWN (available at The Midtown at Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel)

5 fresh raspberries- muddle

¼ oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice (or juice from half a lemon)

2 oz. sweetened chamomile tea*

1½ oz. Maker’s Mark or Woodford bourbon

Mix ingredients in snifter glass, no ice, with rose petal or lemon wheel garnish.

 

Passion Whiskey Sour (served at Spice Market)

Passion Chili Base [ 4 ½ Cups Frozen passion fruit puree, 2 ¼ Cups Sugar, 1 ½ Cups Fresh Lime Juice, 1 Whole Red Thai chili]

 1.5 Oz. Passion Chili base

 ¼ Cup Ginger Ale             1.5 Oz. Bourbon

 Combine bourbon and passion chili base in a mixing glass. Add large, cold ice cubes. Shake vigorously. Pour entire mix into a rocks glass. Top with ginger ale and enjoy!
