After the success of Casimir & Co.’s sister restaurant in the East Village, owner Mario Carta along with fellow French restaurateur Patrick Laurent expanded their brand uptown. To keep the experience at Casimir & Co. authentic the duo drew inspiration from the childhood in Lorraine in both décor and menu offerings. The first floor’s main dining room is outfitted with rustic wood finished and long communal high-top tables making the dining room an idea space for family-style dining. Upstairs the L-shaped dining room is full of natural light shining through the large windows overlooking Lexington Avenue making upstairs a desirable spot to enjoy a meal prepared by Executive Chef Richard Krause, formerly of Café Luxembourg, who prepares dishes simple yet heartwarming French bistro fares. Wanting the “food to speak for itself” Chef Krause prepares a sophisticated yet approachable menu of French bistro staples depicted on personal chalkboards.
Begin your meal at Casimir & Co. by thinking outside the bread basket, order the Panier de Crudités et son Anchoiade, a picnic basket filled to the brim with seasonal vegetables and dipping sauce. No French meal is complete without a basket of crunchy fresh-baked bread but for those counting calories for bikini season knowing this option is there makes us foodies wish more restaurants served this healthy alternative. Continue your starter courses with the ultimate French app, Escargots au Beurre d’Ail Persillé, imported Burgundy snails served in roasted garlic butter and a delightfully simple, Artichaud Vinaigrette, a steamed artichoke served with a mustard thyme vinaigrette that pairs well with the vegetable basket as well. Served as either an appetizer or entree, Casimir & Co. prepares a Steak Tartare with all the traditional essentials from capers to hot sauce to Worcestershire sauce served with a heaping portion of frites. Prepared either tableside, guéridon meaning ‘as is’ on a wooden board or poêle when the grass fed beef is slightly seared on top allowing for the perfect char. If the raw beef option isn’t for you, entree offerings include a moist Whole Branzino Roasted in Sea Salt Crust served with haricot vert, a Half Roasted Organic Chicken served with a side of buttery homemade mashed potatoes, and for our gluten-free and vegan friends, Casimir & Co. offers a refreshing take on pasta—this unique “fettuccine” dish is prepared wholly from fresh Hearts of Palms and served with the diner’s choice of fresh tomato basil or creamy carbonara sauce.
No French meal is complete without some cheese and pastries! Casimir & Co.’s cheese menu offers two types of cheese, Le Saint Marcelin served warm and easily spread on bread and or the Camembert served room temperature. The menu for dessert changes daily and includes sorbets, cream puffs, flourless chocolate cake, and other French staples.
