In a world full of healthy alternatives it is refreshing to know that you can still indulge in a creamy, sweet summer treat, such as decadent Italian gelato, without the guilt associated with binge eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s. For the health-conscious, gelato contains 60 percent less fat and fewer calories than traditional American-style ice cream giving gelato some Italian sex-appeal! What’s even better is gelato prepared by a master with over twenty years of experience in gelato mixology who creates authentic Italian flavors using imported Italian ingredients as well as farm fresh, local organic ingredients.
Luckily, New Yorkers won’t have to venture far to enjoy the artisan-style small batch gelato. Located in the heart of Nolita is Mo Gelato, a sleek, rustic yet minimalist gelateria, where every flavor is made fresh daily and with an overwhelming amount of love for their product. Made several times a day using the Ferrari of gelato machines imported from Italy, the gelataios of Mo Gelato take the most traditional flavors and create a flavor explosion by paying special attention to details from the Sicilian pistachios to Battenkill Valley cow’s milk. Joonbug recently stopped by Mo Gelato, during a monsoon, to see for ourselves what elegant and enchanting frozen options Mo Gelato had to offer. Alessandro, a master gelataio, took us down the line sampling the cream flavors first. Our favorite of the cream gelatos was instantly the Tiramisu made with mascarpone cheese, freshly brewed Italian espresso and dark chocolate. Best sellers include the Cocco, Caffe and our automatic first association with gelato—the Bacio made with Piedmont Gianduia chocolate and hazelnuts. For the more adventurous, there’s the Italian classic, Zabaglione made with Marsala sweet wine and the delightfully different Giulia, a combination of caramel and salted peanuts.
Next up, we sampled dairy-free sorbets with an even lower calorie count for those who can’t check their diets at the door of a gelateria. From Fragola made with fresh organic strawberries to the succulent fresh Mango sorbet, their fruit flavors pair well with the creamy varieties offered at Mo Gelato. Take our expert advice and go for the triple threat of Tiramisu, Fragola, and Dark Chocolate—you won’t regret it. Mo Gelato also keeps the market in mind by creating a ‘gusto del giorno,’ or flavor of the day, that will keep gelato fans on the edge of their spoons. One example of a recent flavor of the day is a Black Sesame gelato that was an instant crowd fave. For another classic Italian frozen treat, Mo Gelato also serves fresh and fruity Granitas, or Italian ice, with flavors including Wild Strawberry and Limone offered daily.
For special occasions, Mo Gelato can create specialty gelato cakes featuring one, two, or three flavors of your choosing in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit your needs. Since gelato melts faster than traditional American ice cream, due to its air content and lower freezing point, Mo Gelato will deliver party packs for 30 servings or more right to your door as well as to-go containers if you promise to run home within a half an hour to save the gelato from melting.
