The flamboyant genius of the electric guitar is back! Prince's largely anticipated tour, "Welcome 2 America," is now unfolding much to the delight of fans who, until recently, salivated over rumors of "The Purple One's" return. Prince, who hasn't toured since 2004, has made a number of appearances over that time but they all seemed to fall on scattered dates that essentially came out of nowhere - other than TV show appearances, Prince would often go as far as appear announced at venues and sing a few songs. Now, at 52, Prince is back and he's keeping it cool.
Though the dates of the tour are not yet listed, Prince has marketed his comeback as a full U.S. tour in 2011. As of now, the only official dates he has played on the tour have been on the East Coast from December of 2010 starting with a two-day show (Dec.15 and 17) at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. and followed up to New York's Madison Square Garden, where he played on Dec. 18th, 19th, and the 29th and more recently on Jan. 18th. The first two sold out in the first 30 minutes!
Prince has brought out the old tracks and mixed them with new ones, and even though he can't dance and do splits like he used to, the voice and the explosive guitar playing lingers. With appearances from celebrities and world class singers, he's showing that aging has not withered him and that he still has the ability to put on one hell of a show.
The latest leak is the announced date of Feb 7th where he will play MSG one more time. From then, who knows? A tri-state area tour announcement or will he quit while he's ahead? Nothing else can be revealed for now, and for those impatient fans waiting for the green light to get their tickets, we'll have to settle for the tease.
