Having recently celebrated an astounding 20 years a one of the world’s leading EDM DJs/producers, Ferry Corsten spoke to Joonbug about his fourth studio album, WKND (Ultra Music/Flashover) just released this Friday. The internationally known and accredited DJ has traveled all over the world making millions dance to his music anywhere from festivals to nightclubs and even his own "Full on Ferry" production. Being major fans, we had to chat with Ferry Corsten to hear all about his latest album, and what Ferry followers can expect throughout the course of the year!
Joonbug 1. Coming a long way from L.E.F to WKND, how would you say your sound has progressed over the years as a DJ/Producer?
FERRY CORSTEN: As a producer, I always try to experiment with my sound and don’t stick to a particular genre. I think that L.E.F. was very original in its own way. WKND is, I think, a more logical step from that album.
Joonbug 2. Celebrating 20 years in the electronic music industry, what has been your proudest accomplishment of your career as of now? What more do you hope to accomplish in the future?
FERRY CORSTEN: I think I am very proud of the fact that I am a doing this for 20 years and still enjoying it. I hope that I produce a lot of new tracks in the future and I hope to continue making people smile with it, too!
Joonbug 3. Creating your record label, Flashover Recordings, back in 2005, how has your career developed even further as a label owner? What new artists or releases should fans expect on the label in the near future?
FERRY CORSTEN: My record label and I are always scouting for fresh talent. When you feel comfortable enough that one of your creations is commercially worthy, you can always send a demo to Flashover. Our fans can expect that we will do our best to separate the men from the boys.
Joonbug 4. Your fourth artist album, WKND on Ultra Music/Flashover Recordings, features collaborations with Armin van Buuren, Betsie Larkin, Aruna and JES. How does the WKND album differ from previous Ferry Corsten compilations?
FERRY CORSTEN: I can say that I am really proud of the result and I hope all the fans are going to like it, too. The album is different compared to its predecessors, since it contains chill-out tracks as well as energetic and uplifting ones! What inspired me when producing is the typical feeling of looking forward to the weekend. This album has that as a consistent theme.
Joonbug 5. Your latest single, "Ain't No Stoppin’" featuring Ben Hague, has already received attention from various DJs and even has recently been remixed by Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano. How do you typically decide which singles will be released from the album? Do you have a personal favorite track on WKND?
FERRY CORSTEN: The singles that the crowd likes the most will be released first. In fact, all of the tracks on the album are radio-ready, but it’s up to the listener as to which ones will eventually pump through your speakers.
Joonbug 6. Your “Full On Ferry” events have been a popular sold-out event for years. How did you come up with the idea for Fully On Ferry, and what is the process behind planning an event of this size?
FERRY CORSTEN: I always like to play together with other DJs, so I thought, why don’t I just create an event in which I invite others to play together with me? With this simple concept, Full On Ferry was born. The process of planning a Full On Ferry night is very hectic, and let’s just keep it at that. [laughs]
