This year the Mad Decent block party tour docked in Brooklyn’s newly renovated Williamsburg Park for a day of thumping beats and thunderstorms. Over a thousand EDM (electro dance music) fans of all ages thronged the grounds in nothing but body paint, beads, and backpacks in the sweltering 90 degree plus heat.
Sets by Bonde Do Role, Lunice, Riff Raff, eXquire, and Erol Alkan pumped electro, house, dub-step, and hip-hop audible for blocks outside of the scene. Sponsors Heineken and Puma provided beer and giveaways. The party mashed on as the sidelines hosted games of table tennis and foosball. Food trucks camped inside the gates providing deep fried fare. The roster progressed toward the headlining acts and the predicted storm clouds rolled over Mad Decent.
Into about ten minutes of Erol Alkan's set---downpour; rejuvenated by the showers the crowds danced and cheered for the show to continue. Backstage technicians scrambled to harbor equipment while Mad Decent DJ/Producer Diplo approached the mic to cancel the remainder of the show. In a hasty attempt to appease the crowd the producers informed the fans that the Headliner Major Lazer would play an extended set at theMusic Hall of Williamsburg free of charge.
The frenzied mob sprinted toward MHOW only to be turned away by a twenty dollar cover and 21+ only admissions in attempt by MHOW's management to accommodate with limited space. Attendees are blogging mad at the fact, though the Mad Decent tour continues and Major Lazer returns to NYC October 27th at Terminal5 tickets are on sale.
