Inside The Mind of Yung Skeeter
The LA producer/DJ talks music, the "EDM" outbreak, and what he has planned for the future

There's DJs and producers out there that you all know by name and face. You've heard their tunes on the radio and in DJ sets. With that said, you've definitely heard Yung Skeeter's music. Born Trevor McFedries, he has been deeply embedded in LA LA land's emerging music scene. One thing to note about Skeeter is his zany approach to music by putting his tracks into categories labeled "bangaledesh techno" and "tropical trap rap." You can also find everything from moombahton to house to indie dance remixes on his soundcloud. Since 2007, the Iowa native has been making beats for just about every genre which makes him an incredibly diverse and knowledgable tastemaker in music. Read our Q&A with Yung Skeeter below and grab his single "Stand Again" out now on Dim Mak Records here.

Were you always into music growing up? If so, what type of music? Always. From day one I pretty much cared about computers and music. I grew up in Iowa and I listened to a lot of pop and R&B as a youth, my mom loved Luther Vandross, Brandy and Kellz and stuff. I was really into punk rock and hardcore in my teens from Pop Punk to militant heavy hardcore shit. Some of the most important bands/acts of my youth: The Pixies, MxPx, The Ataris, Botch, Minor Threat, Juvenile, Mannie Fresh anything, The Bled, Taking Back Sunday, DMX, Eminem, Nirvana, etc.

I was definitely into house/rave music but never really identified with the individual artists, I would get Bad Boy Bill mix cds and type RAVE into Napster or some shit, it was all mislabeled and crazy. Percolator was massive at my school dances though, definitely remember that.

How did you first break out into the LA music scene?
I think I "broke out" by doing what a lot of people weren't doing and that was playing rave tunes and rap and indie rock and trying to make it all make sense.

You've done a lot of producing with urban music but now, what is your DJ style? What do you like to spin? I've always played everything. As of late I play a lot of just straight up jacking house and techno, some rap, whatever pop I like whatever i'm into really.

Can you talk a little bit about how you started Shwayze?
Shwayze and I met in 2007. Bro'd down pretty quick and alongside Cisco we basically went from nobody to signed act to on MTV in like a year. Entirely surreal experience but one of the best times of my life for sure.

What is your overall take on "EDM" and its sub genres like moombahton and dubstep?
I loathe that term so much but I guess I'll have to live with it. I like that people are excited about electronic music, I don't like the people chasing $ with zero appreciation for the history of the music and culture. But that was bound to happen. PLUR.

When's your radio show with Steve Aoki set to launch? How'd that come about?
The first show launches on Nov. 22nd. It'll be on every Thursday night from 10 PM to 12 AM on IHEARTRADIO. Steve and I have been friends for a long time and I'm putting out a bunch of music on Dim Mak so it happened pretty naturally. He respects my taste in music and I respect his so it's pretty organic, plus we're both punk rock dudes at the core so I get to sneak on a Gorilla Biscuits song here or there!

Do you have any DJ gigs coming up? Residencies?
I toured most of the last 5 years of my life. At some point this year I realized I hadn't been in LA for longer than two weeks straight for 5 years. So I decided to take some serious time off and make some music/clear my head. I'm playing with one of my best friends, Aeroplane, in Philly, that's gonna be awesome and playing in Vancouver. Then home for a bit and will probably head to Asia and Australia to play some shows in the new year. Kinda just taking on gigs wherever I want to be. AND I LOVE ASIA/AUSTRALIA.

For the future, can we look forward to new music/mixtapes/ remixes
coming out? Lots of new music coming out on Dim Mak my single Stand Again is out. I have a little something with a massive R&B artist that I love coming out as well. @yungskeeter for updates.
