As we look forward to the quickly approaching summer season, you can also look forward to new music from Derek Vincent Smith, the pioneer of soulful, electro hip-hop better known as Pretty Lights. His new studio album A Color Map Of The Sun will be a two-CD collection of 13-songs plus a second album, Live Studio Sessions From A Color Map of the Sun. This studio album marks the first Pretty Lights album to be released physically and digitally simultaneously. In true Pretty Lights fashion, the album will be available in its entirety as a free download on the album's release date via his website.
"I made this music for everyone," says Smith. "If someone can, I encourage them to purchase A Color Map of the Sun. If not...simply support by sharing the music and sharing the idea. As an artist, I have always reinvested any success I have directly back into the music, the show and the art that goes along with it."
The first single "Around The Block," featuring Talib Kweli, is an uplifting, soulful, hip-hop throwback jam about appreciating the best moments in life. The video for "Around The Block" premiered today, April 15th, along with the trailer for the documentary on the making of the album.
Recorded in Brooklyn, at Pretty Lights' studio in Denver, and on the road in his tour bus studio, A Color Map of the Sun builds on the original Pretty Lights sound and style that Smith pioneered and takes fans through his musical journeys. With that in mind, he spent a year composing, recording music and vocals that emulated genres and time periods throughout the last century, then pressed it to vinyl. The resulting album is analog electronica just right in the incredibly unique and innovative form that Pretty Lights has gone on to create.
You can catch Pretty Lights performing songs from A Color Map of the Sun at festivals such as Governors Ball, Bonnaroo, Electric Forest and Summerfest.
