Event Review: WIllis Earl Beal @ The Knitting Factory 10/28
Red Bull Sound Select hits Brooklyn

Red Bull may be known for their energy packed drinks, but they also do music, and they do it very well. This past Monday (October 28) Red Bull Sound Select was held at Brooklyn’s Knitting Factory, and the amount of talent showcased was enough to blow a music connoisseur’s mind. Headlining the show was blues/rock rising star Willis Earl Beal, with showcases from upstarts Kiah Victoria, YC the Cynic, and CharlieRED. The future stars shined bright this night, and gave music lovers an unforgettable experience.

Opened by songstress Kiah Victoria, concertgoers were left speechless by Victoria’s powerful vocals and fun, well-crafted tunes. Some may recognize Kiah Victoria from Jay Z’sPicasso Baby’ music video in which she sang to the hip-hop legend, and the reaction from Jay was the same as the crowd's, as she already in her young career had the presence and talent of a headlining act. Followed by Bronx MC, YC the Cynic, the crowd was treated to an undeniable talent mixing socially conscious lyrics with slick rhyme schemes, and high energy. The final showcase was rockin’ duo, CharlieRED, who have a fresh take on rock music, fusing it with RnB and hip-hop for an awesome fresh soundscape.

With the bar set high, and the stage set, headliner Willis Earl Beal entered the stage, being  introduced as “nobody,” which is his conceptual alter-ego as well as a play on the title of his latest album ‘nobody knows.’ Beal’s trademark eccentricities and from-the-soul vocals  took over the venue as the now full room moved in closer to the stage to get a look at Beal. Gyrations galore, performing while laying on the floor, and lifted chairs, Beal’s performance was engaging and proved why he has been able to make such a swift name for himself.

To close the show, Beal brought up special guest Cat Power to perform a duet of Bob Dylan’s “Pledging My Time,” as well as Power’s song “Colors and the Kids.” The night was full of so much talent, credit has to be given to Red Bull and Brooklyn Bodega for curating the event. All artists who graced the stage have amazing years of music ahead of them, and reaction from the crowd shows a readiness to bear witness to the future legends.
