Amazing performances and iconic winners rocked the stage last night at the 2013 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift were the biggest winners of the night. They both took home a total of 3 awards including favorite soul/R&B by Justin and Artist of the Year award taken by Taylor Swift for the third year in a row. Rihanna also made a big splash on the winner’s list, taking home the first ever AMA’s Icon Award at the ripe age of 25. Funny man Bill Maher introduced Rihanna to the stage for a performance of one of her #1 hits, Diamonds. Jay Z also congratulated the songstress with a tribute video applauding her for all her hard work and dedication. And the award was presented to her by none other than her biggest fan, her mother Monica Braithwaite Fenty. “Rihanna I’m so proud of you tonight. I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one but tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive and so humble and so focused” she told her daughter as she handed over the award.
All the performances were stellar last night, from Imagine Dragon’s Radioactive performance with a killer drum solo, to Lady Gaga’s playful skit and song with R.Kelly, to Katy Perry’s geisha inspired act. TLC even came together for a reunion on stage as they performed “Waterfalls” with special guest Lil Mama in honor of the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez.
Rihanna wasn't the only icon honored last night. Jennifer Lopez gave an amazing tribute performance to salsa queen Celia Cruz that had the whole audience on their feet dancing along. She made a total of three outfit changes during the performance and still managed to sing her tush off and kill some salsa moves as her partners flipped and turned her around the stage.
But a bunch of the performers left the stunts and antics at home, and wowed the audience with pure, amazing vocal skills, such as Ariana Grande, who sang “Tattooed Heart." Others included, One Direction, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus . Ok, maybe Miley sang “Wrecking Ball” accompanied by a huge animated cat who cried diamonds out its eyes, but her performance was pretty tame compared to her usual antics. She even rocked the red carpet in a simple, elegant pants suit- something we definitely weren’t expecting from the twerking sensation.
