With an abundance of new talent, artists recreating their sound, and stellar festival sets that stood out from the rest, the EDM scene looks like it's constantly generating exciting buzz all throughout the year. Here's our pick of the Top 20 DJs who's made a great impression in the electronic music scene:
It's no secret that Robbert van de Corput, better recognized as, Hardwell, was crowned DJ Mag's #1 DJ. In 2011, he entered the Top 100 list at #24, quickly rising the ranks to #1 in a matter of only two years. There's a reason why he's been voted the top DJ, just look at the views on all his major festival sets on Youtube. His Tomorrowland set garnered 16+ million views while his Ultra set is at 17+ million views. The numbers certainly speak for themselves. At only 25 years old, there's no slowing down this festival tycoon anytime soon!
2. Above & Beyond
English gents Tony McGuinness, Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki make up the trio known as, Above & Beyond. These lads have done more than produce music during their careers, they treat fans to glorious weekly Trance sessions that are appropriatly titled, Group Therapy. With over a decade of expierence under their belts, they've perpetually mastered how to captivate the hearts of Trance lovers worldwide. Now serving as one of the most recognizeable headliners at festivals, Above & Beyond's music labels, Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep continues to release all the latest Trance music that will tug at your heart strings and speak to the soul.
3. Armin Van Buuren
What hasn't this Dutch legend accomplished yet? No, but seriously, Armin is synonymous with being the God of Trance. His credentials say it all: he was voted #1 DJ on DJ Mag's Top 100 list for a record of 5 times, his weekly radio show, A State Of Trance,draws in 20 million listeners in 26 different countries, and this man has been nominated a Grammy for his hit single with Trevor Guthrie, 'This Is What It Feels Like.' His ASOT expeditions led him to having his own tents at music festivals like Ultra Music Festival, and he also has his ARMIN ONLY: INTENSE tour lined up for the new year. The year 2013 has served Armin well.
An American DJ is bound to make the list and the one to trump them all is Kaskade. He was voted 'America's Best DJ 2013' by DJ Times, and we agree. He is nominated for not just one, but two Grammy awards this year for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica Album for his track, 'Atmosphere.' Redefining house music by his own signature style, Kaskade can sell out just about any arena for live appearances and his tours. His wide range in style gives his festival sets a variety of heart pounding music with a blend of soothing vocals to take you on an electric journey.
Any Top DJ's list wouldn't be complete without legendary Dutch DJ, Tiesto. This isn't some grand remark, either. Tiesto has revolutioned his music time and time again, adapting to what the crowd responds to. This can be attributed to his mass success in today's EDM scene. Tiesto's discography is extensive and he has over 15+ million Facebook likes, wow! He's even created an online presence for himself, connecting with his fans through personal video messages on his Instagram account to constant Twitter updates. He's worked with all the major names in the industry, as well as, taking upon protégés with a knack for succeeding. Just ask DJ Danny Avila, he should know a thing or two about being Tiesto's protégé. If Tiesto endorses you as an upcoming Artist, you better feel accomplished. His seal of approval seems to have the weight of all his followers. But anyways, this seasoned veteran still releases bangers and continues to conquer all of his #ClubLife series.
"Di-di-di-Diplo is my favorite DJ," is a phrase that's forever engrained in the minds of all Diplo fanatics. 2013 has been a prolific year for American DJ/Producer, Diplo. Founder of record label, Mad Decent, and one-half of group, Major Lazor, Diplo is at the center of all festivals and collaborations these days. Best known for single-handedly changing the twerk game, Diplo is your go-to Artist for a good time. Not many people may know this, but other than collabing with other industry heavyweights like Tiesto, he's behind many productions for mainstream Artists like Beyoncé, Snoop Lion and Justin Bieber, as well. His Mad Decent Block Party events garner tremendous buzz amongst trap/moombahton fans who are looking to relish in all of Major Lazor's glory. There's a high chance that all your favorite twerking tracks are backed up by Diplo, which is always a good sign. Diplo is a badass when it comes to producing all the best dance music tracks.
Does the track, 'Clarity' sound familiar to you? Of course it does, it had so much airplay on all the major radio stations. Zedd is truly a breakthrough artist in the mainstream arena, but he already held an impressive level of recognition in EDM well before 'Clarity' went viral. Oh, did we forget to mention that 'Clarity' was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Dance Recording too? Zedd is a beast when it comes to producing his own monster tracks and he's only 24 years old. Having recently worked alongside Lady Gaga on her ARTPOP album, Zedd is truly a hot commodity when it comes to producing some of the best original tracks with his rare blend of electro house, dubstep and classical melodies.
8. Calvin Harris
The number one banking DJ has made it to our Top 20 list. According to Forbes.com, Scottish DJ Calvin Harris raked in $46 million in the past year. Those numbers are a testament to Calvin Harris' remarkable talent. It seems as though all his tracks with mainstream Artists from Rihanna to Ellie Goulding, always goes viral. He's a festival favorite for sure, always playing a massive selection of all his original songs to get the crowd going. His influence in not only the EDM scene, but in the pop music department is explosive. And yes, he's also made it on the Grammy's nomination list for Best Dance Recording for his hit single, 'Sweet Nothing' and for Best Dance/Electronica Album for his album '18 Months.'
22 year old Swedish DJ, Alesso, has been garnering lots of attention this past year. His origial tracks like 2013 banger, 'City Of Dream's 'with Dirty South, was played by all the major DJs. His presence was widely accepted at all the music festivals this past year and it seems like he's gotten a hold of a very steady momentum of his own. He's also got a Grammy nomination of his own for Best Remix for 'If I Lose Myself' with One Republic and his track with Calvin Harris, 'Under Control' hit #1 in the UK earlier this year.
10. Laidback Luke
Dutch icon, Laidback Luke, is a crowd favorite and for good reasons. LBL has the innate ability of being able to place his finger at the heart of all the pulsing tunes and playing sets that always remain innovative and original. His Super You&Me tour has seen mass success at all its venues, including TomorrowWorld. Always endorsing up and coming Artists, LBL is really at the forefront of the direction that EDM is taking. Producing hit singles since 1998, the party doesn't stop as long as LBL is releasing new music.
11. Mat Zo
UK Artist, Mat Zo, is the future of EDM. Currently under previously mentioned, Anjunabeats, Mat Zo is part of a new breed of DJs/Producers who are charting territories marked by seasoned professionals in the industry. His first studio album, Damage Control, was released this past year hitting the #1 spot under Billboard's Heatseekers Albums. With already a huge array of his own original tracks, Mat Zo is only slaying the dance charts right now with his collaboration with Porter Robinson on their track, 'Easy' which also hit the #1 on Beatport.
12. Nicky Romero
Dubbed as the 'Next Generation DJ', the Netherlands have yet again graciously blessed dance music with DJ/Producer, Nicky Romero. After seeing a tremendous breakthrough in 2012 with his hit single, 'Toulouse', Nicky Romero secured his spot amongst the veteran DJs in 2013. He's worked alongside Britney Spears on her eigth studio album, Britney Jean, and he continues to impress dance music afioncados all across major music festivals.
The hard-hitting Trance duo, W&W, proved in the past year that they are a force to be reckoned with. Once backed by Armin van Buuren's Armada Music label, this duo produces tracks that are on the definitive edge between trance and big room house sounds. Now they are under their own label, Mainstage Records, which is still part of the Armada branch. Creating their own unique blend of acid-infused tracks like 'AK-47' and heart-pouding rhythms like 'Arena', this duo is dominating dance floors worldwide.
14. Benny Benassi
Exceptionally talented and seasoned veteran, Benny Benassi, shows an impressive feat in remaining as one of the most relative DJs of our time. Remixes of tracks like 'Satisfaction', 'Cinema', and 'Beautiful People' all have one thing in common: mastermind Benny Benassi is behind all those original tracks. Still touring the globe with his incredible Italian charisma, Benassi has sure earned his spot on our list.
15. Adventure Club
Hailing from Montreal, Canadian duo Christian Srigley and Leighton James also known as, Adventure Club, are concocting some serious music. Characterized mostly by their dubstep/clubstep sounds, they deliver quality music to all the bass heads out there. The Superhero theme has become their trademark sign and in 2013 we only saw the beginnings of their success. Watch out for this duo in 2014, they're going to be massive!
16. Dillon Francis
Funny guy, Dillion Francis, had a fantastic year. As one of the leading pioneers of the sub-genre, Moombahton, Dillon Francis has made a name for himself in all the major music airwaves. He consistently remains as a fan-favorite at music festivals, closing one of the major stages at Ultra Music Festival in 2013. Since the success of his single, 'I.D.G.A.F.O.S.', he's always released chart-topping tunes that includes original tracks and remixes. What's next for the creative Dillon Francis? Who knows, but one thing is for sure: whatever it is, it will hit you like a ton of bricks.
17. Porter Robinson
We're proud of Porter Robinson for these reasons: he produced his hit track, 'Say My Name' from his college dorm room that hit #1 on Beatport, his second second track, 'Spitfire' also hit the #1 spot on Beatport's overall release chart, then his following track, 'Language' also, you guessed it, hit the #1 spot on Beatport and iTunes, as well. For someone so promising at a young age, it must be difficult to live up to such high expectations---not. Porter Robinson has mastered delivering to festival crowds along with producing #1 singles. He throws down a mean set that will have you enticed throughout. He's a claimed his spot amongst seasoned veterans as he plays at festivals wordlwide from Ultra Music Festival to Mysteryland. We are excited to see all the promising things Porter has in store for us in the new year.
18. Eric Prydz
Swedish DJ, Eric Prydz, is legendary amongst his underground followers. Known for embodying techno and progressive house, he remains a relatively low profile compared to other superstar DJs. In today's world where fans are connected through their favorite musicians through social media platforms, Prydz lets his music speak for itself. It was quite evident that Prydz had a huge following when we were there to watch him at Ultra Music Festival in 2013. He led the main stage with an array of underground sounds mixed with big room elements. Ironically, his enigmatic demeanor in music and style is precisely the reason why he's still one of the best DJs today.
19. Dada Life
There are no bigger personalities than Swedish duo, Dada Life. Loved and adored by many fans for embodying a fun, rage trooping, all around 'feel good' vibe, Dada Life endorses a carefree attitude that makes them stand out from the rest of the bunch. They released their track 'Born To Rage' this year, further dominating the dance floors everywhere. When Dada Life is in town, you all know you can expect an outrageous party filled with champagne showers, limitless banana suits and an intense level of euphoria as you move to their music.
20. Seven Lions
Rounding up our Top 20 list is Jeff Montalvo, the man behind Seven Lions. He made a seriously splash in the EDM scene this past year, playing notable sets in venues nationwide that had people immersed into a trance from his music. He was selected as part of Porter Robinson's main support on his Circle Assembly Tour, which had him playing at Electric Daisy Carnival New York, Ultra Music Festival and Camp Bisco. The 'Seven Lions experience' is something people will have to experience for themselves in order to be fully captivated by the sounds and magic of Seven Lions.
