Even though the Canadien retailer Aritzia has been opening stores in the United States, it was just announced that a new store location is coming to New York City. They currently have a temporary location for now, but a permanent store will open in SoHo in May.
Aritizia is a vertically integrated multi-label retailer typically for women ages 18 to 25. There are eight brands that are produced in house, including J Brand and Rag & Bone. They are said to be completely independent from each other yet complement the other brands as well. The brands are not private label. They haven’t been sold to other stores yet, but plans are made for being wholesale eventually.
The Company operates 48 stores ranging from Chicago to San Francisco, and even in New Jersey. Its CEO, Brian Hill, wanted to make sure that the company was at its popularity peak before a Manhattan shop was opened. He plans to open six shops on the island, and believes that the future Fifth Avenue store will be the biggest project. However, its main competition includes Intermix and Opening Ceremony, and feels that the SoHo store might be the retailer’s biggest battle since the stores in that neighborhood are predominantly single branded.
Mr. Hill wanted to expand to the United States because their products really hit home with American consumers, working well with Americans from top-selling standpoints. The only difference being the average amount of money spent, since it is higher in the United States than in Canada. With climates in the U.S. and in Canada being so similar, the retailer is focusing on the Northeast, Northern California and Northwest regions. Watch out, NYC, Aritzia is coming to town!
