Husband and wife design team Clements Ribeiro have once again defied the old adage love and business shouldn't mix with their Autumn/Winter 12 collection. The couple, who met while studying at Central St. Martin's and went on to form their eponymous label in the early '90s, stayed true to their femininity but this time showing a tougher side with leather.
The show was held in the ornate Goldsmith's Hall, which with its gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers was the perfect juxtaposition to the punk feel of the collection. Models wore disheveled chignons held back by turban styled headbands and aces were dewy and fresh tainted only by a brilliant hot pink lip to match their spike heeled Jimmy Choos.
Citing Yves St Laurent's late muse, Lou Lou Failaise as inspiration for their fall collection, the design duo nodded to her signature magpie style with the pairing of colors, textures and print. Delicate knits over supple leather, ornately printed silks and folky embroidery, the collection was a brilliant hodpodge of styles and influences, streamlined together into deceptively simple looks.
Staple Clements knits were whisper thin and in an array of jewel tones. Hot pink, navy blue and rust brown were mixed with the colour of the minute, mint green, on raglan jumpers. Knits were paired with liquidy leather, from loose fitting tops to slouchy elbow length gloves and a standout pair of wide leg, pajama styled trousers. Waists were cinched by wide 80s style perforated leather belts.
Pattern wise, the designers used this season's popular baroque prints, tartan and folk inspired embroidery creating a Heidi cum Debbie Harry effect. Tartan pencil skirts and trousers were worn with leather t shirts and fitted blazers while loud flower printed dresses were accented by detailed embroidery. Standout pieces were a silver brocade dress with embroidered breast and 70s peasant dress with scalloped leather collar and detailing on the shoulders.
A classic double breasted white wool coat worn with a simple white t shirt and loose leather shorts was the key look for punk meets sophisticate.
Clements Ribeiro's Autumn/Winter 12 collection blends feminine and edgy all the while seeming completely effortless and giving us all wistful visions of creating beautiful clothing with our brilliant partner perhaps, from bed, lounging in leather pajamas.
