Behind the Fabric with Tina Tandon
We chat with Tina about launching her Spring 2012 collection, how she got started, and what advice she has for aspiring designers!

DP: When did you start the T. Tandon line and tell me how it all began.

TT: I started in Spring 2008. I have always wanted to have my own line, knew I would do it, since I was young. But, the question was when. So, one day, when I got really fed up working late nights for a fashion company, I decided to quit and do all that hard work for my own line. I packed up my bags, and flew to India, where I knew some manufacturers to start sampling for my first collection. I had no particular business plan, or anything, I wanted to just do it. I started basically with no idea of what I was really doing, and how, who my target audience is, my business model, nothing! I just went right into it. And than refined it every year to what it is now.

DP: Who is the Summer 2012 woman? Describe her.

TT: Summer 2012 collection is very versatile, so we have some young and hip styles, and some mature and sophisticated ones as well. We take pride in having versatile designs in our collections that both mother and daughters can shop from. So, we have something for the 20 something hipsters, to a sophisticated 35-45 year old fashion savvy mom! But, it's definitely a woman who loves uniqueness in her clothes, is not afraid to set herself apart from the crowd, in fact she loves to stand out. She has her own unique style and carries it with confidence.

DP: Who or what influences your style and designs?

TT: I am always inspired by vintage designs from the 20s, 50s, 60s and 70s. Fashion icons of the bygone eras like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Twiggy fascinate me. So, I have a hint of vintage in my designs. I also love nature, and traveling. So, I might pick up an idea from the different parts of the world I visit or a color or idea from a flower I saw in a garden. It all depends on what is striking my mood at the time.

DP: Advice for those looking to create a line and make it in the fashion & business industries.

TT: I would say, don't get into anything that you don't have the passion for. You really have to have the passion for something to be able to keep going and make it into a success one day.  Sometimes, the going gets tough, and you have to work late nights, and have no social life, but if you have the passion for it, you wouldn't mind it.  For fashion business, you really have to learn the ropes and have the technical knowledge. So, getting proper education and/ or experience is necessary, unless you are a big celebrity or have enough money to hire a design team to do it for you. Even than you need to know, the ins and outs of the business. As they say knowledge is power!
