NYFW SS 2014: Behind the Scenes at Ruth Tarvydas
Joonbug’s exclusive interview with Wendy Scalzo, hair design team

Wendy Scalzo, a talented Rhode Island Cosmetologist, had the opportunity of a lifetime when she was asked to work on the Ruth Tarvydas show. Held in the Altman Building in Chelsea, Scalzo worked (along side other cosmetologists, Robin, Nicole, Hannah, Kim and Mayra) to make the designer’s vision a reality. “She [Tarvydas] had a specific vision that came to life on the runway with assistance from the garments, hair and makeup.” Scalzo says that Tarvydas’s vision was an underwater effect. “She wanted it to seem as if the hair was suspended in the water, floating up away from the face.” For makeup, the models rocked a “very strong mask, directly across the face. They had dark brows that faded to the cheeks.”

When asked what trends she noticed at NYFW, Scalzo replied, “a lot of pops of color. In Ruth’s show, there were a lot of blues and teals to simulate water. But among other designers, I saw lots of violets, reds, whites and beigey neutrals.” For Spring/Summer 2014, Scalzo predicts “ready-to-wear pieces in violet, a lot of violet! I see an overall feminine feel as well; garments will be structured, yet flowing and there will be more movement.” Her favorite designers, aside from Tarvydas, include Betsey Johnson (“she’s so fun!”), Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, BCBG, and Marc Jacobs. “I’m eclectic,” she says. “I like classic looks and wearable art.”

When she’s not behind the scenes at Fashion Week, Wendy (as her students know her) is an instructor at the Toni & Guy Hairdressing Academy in Cranston, RI. Many Alumni (Stephanie, Stacy, Johnny, Stefania, Josh, Alana, Ilona, Bayleigh, and Erica) were also behind the scenes at Ruth Tarvydas, which created a “kinship” behind the scenes. This familial feel created a stress-free and smooth backstage experience. And while the experience was a “dream come true,” Scalzo says that, “I loved seeing our alumni’s talent grow from our last Fashion Show, Soiree. This show, is very similar to what we do at our Toni & Guy Soiree, where we conceptually think of an idea, and create it using hair, makeup and wardrobe.” She adds, “as an instructor, training students for real-world events, and seeing them thrive at something as big as NYFW, is the pinnacle of success. I love watching their creativity blossom!”

Opportunities like this, do exist for Toni & Guy Students. “Our Academy gives students the opportunity to further their creative spirits. If this is what you want, to be in this industry, don’t be too nervous to go after it! Dreams do come true, for sure,” Scalzo encourages. This year’s Toni & Guy RI Soiree will be held at Twin River in Lincoln, RI on November 17th for anyone interested in attending. The Academy is also open for appointments Tuesday through Saturday, with a great special running now. They’re offering a VIP Membership for $40 a month, including unlimited blow-dry style outs, makeup touchups and 10% off TIGI Retail. While you’re there, say hi to Wendy Scalzo, Rhode Island’s own beauty-rockstar!
