Glam Damn It
It’s no secret that fashion designers and department stores have been hit hard by the recession. Many smaller boutiques have been forced to close, while other shops are trying everything to stay open. Mayor Bloomberg is expected to announce today the city’s proposal to help the fashion industry by throwing a party.
The plan is to throw a bash in order to stimulate retail. Bloomberg will be joined by the likes of Anna Wintour, (editor of American Vogue) designer Vera Wang, and Terry L. Lundgren, chairman of Macy’s.
Supposedly, the Devil herself told the talk show host to drop twenty pounds, or she’d drop Oprah from the cover.
Wintour says that while her magazine only uses very thin models, it features an awareness of obesity and the weight struggle that people like Oprah have dealt with.
Chanel’s Paris/Moscow pre-fall ready-to-wear collection incorporates elements of imperial Russia and Russian folklore. The fashion house’s couture ateliers have once again created a luxury collection that stands out from the previous while keeping in form with the Chanel name. Photographed by Karl Lagerfeld himself, Sasha Pivovarova (IMG) is the face of the campaign, and we are not surprised by the designer’s choice. While the clothing remains a staple, the accessories speak for themselves – shining through each picture as their own shining statement. Below, check out the House of Chanel’s Paris/Moscow accessory video:
Photographer Steven Klein goes with muse and legendary supermodel Amber Valletta for a fashion spread in Italian Vogue Couture Supplement. “Wild Couture” features Valletta in high end couture gowns and high tea attire behind bars, chains, fences and iron – presumably intrigued by the caged in lions. The demure yet sexed up scene perfectly depicts a fashionista in the “wild”.
The celebrities are becoming fashion designers to raise money for the HIV and AIDS awareness campaign. Dita designed a white cropped tee with a woman’s face on the front of it. In her photoshoot, she paired the shirt with bloomers, fishnets and gloves to be in sync with her demure style. Katy Perry designed a tight body suit with a smiley face inside a heart.
American Boy singer Estelle created a tee with the words “Life is too short... have sex… be safe,” on it. Cyndi Lauper used a play on the hit song that made her famous to create her shirt: “Girls just wanna have safe sex.”
The sassy new line hits H&M stores May 28.
Tyra Banks can not seem to make up her mind when it comes to her judging panel on Americas Next Top Model (or as I like to call it Americas Next Top Nobody). First it was self proclaimed first supermodel ever Janice Dickinson, then Tyra brought in British invasion Twiggy, however she wasn’t good enough so Paulina Porizkova was brought in to take her place. Although all seemed well in front of the camera, behind it was a different story; Porizkova was fired on her birthday (April 9th). She claims on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson that she was fired because of “my gigantic, huge ego. Which I wasn't aware of until I was told by the producers that I have an ego problem."
Donned in a brunette wig, 22 year old Olsen poses for the summer issue of VMan magazine. Ashley Olsen, usually seen with her twin sister Mary-Kate, has begun to branch out. While MK is focusing her attention on acting, Ashley seems to be evolving herself into every aspect of the fashion world. These pictures show the world thatichelle Tanner doesn’t live in her any more. “You got it dude”.
Michelle Obama has received a ton of attention for her elegant style, but recently the wrong designer received credit for one of her looks.
At last week’s Time 100 gala in New York City, her black column gown was attributed to Azzedine Alaia, when it was actually designed by Michael Kors, who is currently a Project Runway judge.
When the first lady donned a fuchsia Michael Kors gown at the White House Correspondent’s dinner this week, fashion writers wondered if her choice was a peace offering.
Although ‘Desperate Housewives’ star Eve Longoria Parker was last months Harpers Bazaar Singapore cover girl- we have to talk about it this month. Put it this way… She looks amazing, then again- does she ever look bad? Nope. Parker looks luminous and stylish, hardly recognizable. Looks were taken straight off the runway a la Louis Vuitton 2009.
After graduating from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC with an architecture degree, Nicholas D’Aurizio realized that his ambition and love of fashion ‘was not a phase’ and headed to New York to fulfill his dream.
In the move from accessories to clothing designer, Nicolena was born. The line comes from a fusion of past times, having been captivated by his grandfather Nicol, who was the head sampler maker for Calvin Klein and Yeohlee and Livia (whom everyone called Lena) his grandmother who was a seamstress. D’Aurizio has always kept with him a mental image as a child growing up around sewing and the creative mind of his paternal Italian grandparents. D’Aurizio is currently working out of his Upper East Side apartment, using his living room as an active work space.
