Tanning beds and their help or hurt has been an issue debated since they first became popular. While there are plenty of fake and bakers that are older, wiser, but seem not to know any better – a large percentage of high schoolers and younger make up the highest amount of tanning bed lovers. This rang true as I sat at my younger sisters’ lacrosse game this weekend (age 17) and commented on the fact that her entire team as well the opposers were extremely tan, as if they all just went away on a tropical lacrosse vacation.
Well a few states have decided to take action against the negative effects of tanning with a ban or other non tanning tactic. A bill proposed in Texas will require anyone under the age of 18 to obtain a doctor’s note before using a tanning bed as well as require a parent present during sessions. Florida lawmakers want to ban anyone under the age of 16 from tanning, period. North Dakota and Colorado are the next states to jump on the bandwagon.
It’s a good thing that LiLo just came out with a tanning spray – this way teenage girls everywhere can keep up their orange look without going against the government!
Berlin police officers have been banned from wearing their favorite designer duds. Yep, that’s right – such names as Fred Perry, Ben Sherman, ACAB, Alpha Industries, Consdaple, Lonsdale, Pit Bull, Outlaw, Troublemaker and Thor Steinar have all been ‘outlawed’ so to speak.
Why might you ask? According to authorities, such labels are apparently popular among neo-Nazis with right-wing extremist views - which disciplinary action is taken against anyone with such ideologies. With the new rule in effect there has been an outpouring of negative press pegged to the say so. Union reps say that undercover officers will not feel as safe and feel they are surely at risk as they will not be doning such wears as those of the neo-Nazi groups. Furthermore, while Thor Steiner is strongly associated with these groups, both Fred Perry and Ben Sherman have spoken out about their clear efforts to distance themselves from such types.
WWD mentioned a snippet today about a new Bravo show titled NY Prep. Speculation gives way to what we’re sure is fact that the show will have “characters” emulating their Gossip Girl Upper East Side counterparts. Will life imitate art which a bunch of Serenas and Chucks running around purchasing designer duds, drinking in swanky hotel bars, and causing drama on their elusive school front staircases? Or will it actually embody what REAL LIFE is like for a teenager, regardless of the fact that Mommy and Daddy’s money can buy you everything – or so they say.
I guess we will keep just have to keep you posted on the show’s launch and further predictions. Although we have a feeling that NY Prep may not go over as well as expected by Bravo company execs.
Earlier this month, Le Monde launched an offshoot of T Magazine creatively titled M. The lifestyle mag has said to have been under development for over about a year and plans to publish monthly.
Le Monde’s M has for sure taken the fashion route with Audrey Marnay gracing the publications first cover. Leading editorial was shot by photographer Matthias Vriens in a black and white montage that brings together 20 of the most sought out models in the industry, which includes a handful of newcomers. Such names include Tanya Dziahileva, Denisa Dvorakova, Daiane Conterato, Sophie Vlaming, Vlada Roslyakova and Liu Wen among others.
So far so good – we like the direction we see the mag going in.
We for sure give them props for launching in a climate where magazine sales are down and editorial houses are folding, as sales of the glossy pages decrease in favor of the blogdom and online sites that don’t cost a penny to scan.

Comprised of tulle, beading and sequin, this safari-esque necklace is ideal for the warmer months to come. I envision it with a black or cream jumpsuit and a few thin bangles or with an un-fitted racerback tank and draped pant. Either way it’s a great statement piece to add to your wardrobe.

With so many sushi places to compete with in the city, Jewel Bako still manages to stay distinctive as the go to place for downtown sushi. The fish is fresh as expected, and there’s nothing showy here, no crazy inventions, no attempt to cram the most unusual ingredients in a chunk of rice. Just the finest quality of hamachi, unagi and tekka rolls, white miso soup and Japanese mushrooms steamed in sake and yuzu.
Though it can be a bit overcrowded, especially at the bar, its sparkling walls (Jewel Bako means jewel box) are a nice distraction while you maneuver the restaurant to find a seat, and a complement to one of the most delicious sushi dinners in the city.
BlackBook’s April music issue features Nicole Richie as their cover model. It is our guess as well as others that she is surely channeling Lady Gaga, and while we love Nicole, they should just have gotten Lady to do the cover (she is after all IN the music biz). Inside the issue’s pages are highlights from Lady Sovereign, Little Boots, Chairlift, PJ Harvey, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Ryan Adams and others.
So, we decided to turn this bit of Nicole Richie cover tidbit into a fashion post, as she is afterall rocking those LV tights, paillette jacket, and destroyed tank – not to mention her 14 karat ring and nail collection. Gorgeous.
