The Rubin Museum Launches Visionary Circle

At the end of September, I attended the Fall Kickoff for the Rubin Museum of Art’s young patron's group, Visionary Circle. After learning about Visionary Circle at their pre-launch event, I was eager to return to this tranquil space that creates a silent energy—certainly unique to its location in Chelsea.

CAUSE OF THE WEEK
Cancer Support Community's Red Ball Event: Cocktails, Dancing, and an Inspirational Film

Imagine a loved one was diagnosed with cancer, and within two weeks, they were gone. This is what actress, mother, and now film producer Alysia Reiner experienced. Her father was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and within days passed away.

Like many, Alysia had to quickly deal with the process of grieving-but didn't know how. As Alysia states, " Death is still such a taboo subject in our country." To counteract our usual inability to accept grief, Alysia channeled her own mourning through film. She created the film Speed Grieving as a way for people to accept and process their own grief.

GREEN TIPS
One Simple Way to Save 10 Gallons of Water A Day

You may have heard of the ol' brick-in-the-toilet-tank- trick to save water. The idea is that toilets know when to stop filling with water once they reach a certain level. Rather than the toilet thinking it can stop at seven to ten gallons, displacing that water with an object will reduce the actual amount of water "needed."

Since bricks are known to disintegrate in toilet water overtime, plastic (and recycled!) water bottles will work just as well. Simply drop some sand or pebbles into a bottle, fill it up with H2O, and place in the tank! The bottle will displace enough water to save up to a gallon each use, which can add up to 10 gallons a day!

White Roof Project: Paint a Block This Weekend!

Manhattan is turning white.

No, it's not Christmas, (although it may feel like winter outdoors). Rather, the White Roof Project is turning the entire city block on East 4th and 3rd Streets at Bowery.... white. So, if you find yourself in Manhattan this Sunday, September 25, you should head down to The Bowery and see for yourself.

What the?

First comes first. What's the White Roof Project? It's an organization dedicated to reducing the stress on our power grid and combating the Urban Heat Island Effect by painting roofs white. White roofs absorb less heat, reflect more sunlight, and as a result, lower energy costs and literally cool down the earth.
