Sure, you've probably heard the plaintive wails of Björk and might have lost yourself in the fairytale soundscapes of Jonsi and Sigur Rós from time to time, but how much do you really know about Iceland's current music scene? The enigmatic and seldom-visited island is certainly famed for its creativity, consistently churning out artists whose otherworldly voices seem to come from another planet.
Fortunately for those of us that can't afford a ticket to Reykjavik, Iceland holds a travelling festival called the "Taste Of Iceland" that takes place in a different city each year and is designed to promote the country's music, cuisine and culture. This year it will be held in NYC and will include, among other things, a free concert at Le Poisson Rouge on October 5th at 6pm titled "Reykjavik Calling," that will showcase unique collaborations between 3 breaking Icelandic musicians and 2 NYC based artists.
On the Icelandic side, the show will feature Iceland’s queen of alternative pop (who's being touted as the next Bjork), electro-dance four piece Sykur, and singer-songwriter Snorri Helgason. The American acts will include a solo set by Alberta Cross frontman Petter Stakee, and a DJ set by Caveman (a previous Reyka Vodka U.S. winner).
Tickets for the event are free when you RSVP but space is limited so be sure to register for this highly anticipated show early. Click here for tickets/info and scroll down to check out a recent video by Sykur.
